In short
China is not “roam like home”. Without a travel pass, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell day charges (or block data until you buy one). A week of Maps at £6-8 a day already beats most 7-day China eSIMs. Buy a China eSIM if the phone takes one. Keep the UK line on for bank texts. Turn data roaming off on that SIM.
- Unlocked phone, eSIM possible, China missing from the plan. China plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Plan that already includes China. Some Ultimate / Complete extras do, if China sits on that Extra / world list. Read your line in the app before you fly, not a memory of an ad.
- Day pass (EE Zone 1 if listed, O2 Travel if listed, Vodafone Global Roam, Three Extra). One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days the eSIM almost always wins.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The “welcome to China” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at £8 is already £56. Maps, a menu to translate start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.
How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in China
UK networks do not meter China like a €/MB extra-EU bill. They sell a daily pass, or a rest-of-world bolt-on. China is Extra / world / Zone 1-C style, like the USA, not Europe. Open Maps without a pass and you either get no data (EE) or you trigger that day’s charge. Country lists move: check the app.
| UK operator | Without a China pass | What 15 MB of Maps costs | Pass if you stay on the UK SIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | No extra-EU data until you buy a pass | The day pass, not a per-MB bill | Rest-of-world if China is listed. Daily pass often around £6 if the zone exists for that country. USA Zone 1 is not automatically China. Recheck My EE; the country page can drop China on a given day. |
| O2 | Standard roaming unless Travel or Inclusive Zone Ultimate is on the plan | One Travel day if the bolt-on is active | Travel bolt-on is often ~£7/day if China is listed among the 75. Ultimate plans can include that longer list. The shorter Inclusive Zone (27 destinations) usually skips China. Confirm in My O2. |
| Vodafone | Zone C or D daily fee if Global Roam is not in the plan | One roaming day as soon as data attaches | Often ~£7.86/day on pay-monthly plans started on or after 11 August 2021 (later guides near £8). Older plans: often £6/day. Check the roaming checker with your number. |
| Three | China is Go Roam Around the World Extra, not Europe | A daily Extra charge, or PAYG if you have no pass | Daily Extra often £7 if you joined or upgraded from 1 October 2021. Plans from 18 December 2025: often £8/day from 1 April 2026. Complete plans from 22 June 2025 can include Extra. Extra destination lists often include China. Europe or “Around the World” without Extra may skip it. |
These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £6-8 passes is already £42-56. A 7-day eSIM on the China comparison is almost always cheaper, and it skips a tight daily cap where one exists.
UK roaming, even “included”, lands on a Chinese partner. That is not always China Mobile. Off the cities, an eSIM that writes China Mobile sometimes holds better than a pass glued to another radio.
When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three China pass still makes sense
The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps and translation run all day for a week.
EE. Rest-of-world daily pass if China is listed, UK allowance. Not the same as USA Zone 1. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Shanghai then Xi’an: add the days in My EE before you tap yes. Still compare that total with a 7-day eSIM.
O2. Travel bolt-on around £7/day, China listed on some 75-destination lists, not on the short Inclusive Zone. Inclusive Zone Ultimate uses the longer list. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”. If it says rest of world or a short Inclusive Zone, do the sum before you open Maps.
Vodafone. Global Roam day fee on most newer pay-monthly plans, often ~£7.86/day after 11 August 2021. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.
Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. Complete extras can include China. Extra lists often name China. “Around the World” without Extra does not.
Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.
Fair-use (often around a few months a year outside the UK) still applies. A one-week tourist stay does not hit it. A “world unlimited” contract read too fast is still a UK plan, with a roaming partner that is not always China Mobile.
China eSIM: the alternative to UK roaming charges
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a China plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes China Mobile. Network detail: best mobile networks in China.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. A non-mainland eSIM usually cannot be added once you are in mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao stay outside that rule.
Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi sell China: open the plan page (operator, 5G, hotspot, routing), not the brand homepage. An Asia eSIM only replaces a China pack if mainland China is listed.

How to turn off UK data roaming in China
Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.
- Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
- Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a China profile as roaming even on China Unicom.
- Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
- If your plan already includes China: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.
Failure n°1: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.
Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other China roaming alternatives
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or a work contract blocks a second profile. China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom and a few arrivals shops still sell prepaid. Compare the counter with the China eSIM table before the queue. A 1 a.m. arrival often finds the stand shut. Google dies on a local SIM.
Rent Pocket WiFi only if screens without eSIM remain: tablet, old Android, locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a router by default. Shops and 7-day maths: China eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.
Hotel, station or airport Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops on the train. The firewall stays. Do not build the trip on it.
How many GB for a China trip without roaming
Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen: maps, metro, photos, translation. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the train, or a laptop stays on hotspot.
3-5 days
5-10 GBShanghai city break. Maps, metro. Hotel Wi-Fi at night.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities. A little video. 15 GB if you doubt.
12-15 days
15-20 GBSeveral provinces. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited pack whose daily cap is printed in GB. Recheck hotspot.
The data calculator tightens the step. Recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Trains, west: the mast matters more than the gigabytes. Pick the network first, then the GB.
How to compare a UK roaming pass and a China eSIM
- Open the UK operator app. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether China is already in the plan.
- Open the China page. Operator column (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
- Stick the two totals together. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon, unless China is truly included.
- Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
- Install the eSIM at home. A pass is bought in the app, sometimes too late, with the day already started.
