An Airalo, Holafly or Ubigi eSIM rides a Chinese network: China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom. The right pick depends on the route and the routing (local or roaming). Buy a plan that prints the operator, not only a China flag. Install the profile before you leave: a foreign eSIM usually cannot be added once the phone is in mainland China. - Trains, west, villages, anything outside Beijing–Shanghai–Shenzhen. China Mobile. Compare packs that write China Mobile.
- Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu only. China Unicom or China Telecom often suffice. Airalo, Holafly, Saily on the same page.
- Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, ChatGPT. Look for a travel eSIM that routes off the mainland (roaming), not a 100% local radio. A China Mobile counter SIM blocks those apps.
- Compatible phone, profile already installed. Take an eSIM rather than plastic as soon as the listing names the network. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
The QR code does not radiate in Beijing. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom do. A travel eSIM is wholesale capacity glued onto one of those three radios, sometimes via roaming that sits outside the firewall. Between Beijing South station and a platform in Xi’an, the local mast decides if Maps, Alipay and translation hold. Not the app logo.
This ranks networks for a visitor, not a Chinese subscriber. Showcase 5G speeds weigh less than a hole in the provinces, and less than a local plan that cuts Gmail. eSIM partners move: open the operator column on the China comparison before you pay.
What “best mobile network in China” means here
Opensignal does not hand out one overall winner. Recent reports often put China Telecom first on city 5G speeds, and China Mobile on coverage where people live and move. China Unicom stays dense in the metros and often shows up as a travel-eSIM partner. For a traveller, Nanjing Road 5G shop-window order is the wrong order. The useful order is: does the train have radio, and does the plan leave the firewall.

Hong Kong and Macao are not mainland China. A “China” pack on the comparison does not automatically include Hong Kong. A Hong Kong eSIM helps if you transit there, and it is also where you can still add a mainland profile you forgot at home.
1. China Mobile: the safety net outside Shanghai
China Mobile has the most masts. That is the first test if the stay leaves the Beijing–Shanghai–Shenzhen triangle: Xi’an, Chengdu then Jiuzhaigou, Yunnan, overnight trains, second-tier cities. For a visitor, China Mobile means fewer holes between stations. Not the smoothest TikTok on the Bund.
eSIMs that name China Mobile are the default as soon as the stay is not 100% urban. That is not a forever contract. Read the plan page, not a 2024 blog.
A China Mobile eSIM on roaming (traffic leaves the mainland) can keep Gmail. A plastic China Mobile SIM from the airport cannot. The China Mobile logo does not tell you the routing. The provider page does, sometimes in a “VPN” or “international apps” line.
Ubigi, GigSky and some Nomad packs sometimes publish China Mobile. Recheck on the day you buy.
2. China Unicom: city radio, frequent travel-eSIM partner
China Unicom holds Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, central Chengdu. In town, the coverage gap with China Mobile shows mostly off the ring roads, not on a metro hop. It is often the partner behind travel eSIMs: Airalo, Holafly, Saily.
A Shanghai + Suzhou weekend: China Unicom will do. A Sichuan loop plus villages: China Mobile first.
On our China comparison, China Unicom is not rare. Several brands list it, sometimes as a pair. The operator line on the plan matters more than the app logo.
3. China Telecom: urban 5G, shorter footprint in China
China Telecom shows up in downtown 5G tests, especially in the south. Useful if you stream in a Shenzhen café whose Wi-Fi dies. Off the corridor, China Telecom weighs less than China Mobile.
eSIM listings name China Telecom less often than China Unicom, but Yesim, Roamless and some Orange Travel packs sometimes write it. Only chase China Telecom if the provider writes it.
Which China eSIM brand lands on which Chinese network
The shop window is not the mast. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi, Yesim resell capacity. Orange Travel often routes as roaming: the listing may say “Orange” without naming China Mobile. An “Asia” pack can omit mainland China, or land on a weaker radio than a country plan. This is not a market for a generic regional, unless the list writes mainland China and install before you arrive.
Two China Unicom eSIMs are not equal if one routes locally (firewall) and the other as roaming (Google often reachable). Read that line before the price per GB.

Three China itineraries, three network picks
Shanghai + Beijing, 7 days, 10 GB. Almost any serious 4G/5G plan attaches. Take a pack that names China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom, with hotspot if you share to a laptop. China Unicom will do. China Mobile does not hurt. Install before the flight.
Xi’an + Chengdu + trains. China Mobile first. An unlimited whose daily cap is not printed in GB is a trap: after the cap, China Telecom 5G in town no longer helps you in a provincial station.
China then Hong Kong. Two plans, or a pack that lists both territories. The Asia regional wins on simplicity only if mainland China and Hong Kong both appear. Otherwise you buy two profiles. Install the mainland profile before you land at PVG or PEK. Hong Kong stays outside the install lock.
How to choose a China eSIM network on the comparison
- Operator column (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) before price per GB.
- Routing: local (firewall) or roaming (Western apps often reachable). If the listing is silent, assume local blocks Google.
- 5G and hotspot: an unlimited without hotspot is a phone plan, not a share to a laptop.
- Activation: install on Wi-Fi at home. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only at arrival. PEK or PVG Wi-Fi does not save a forgotten QR.
- Apply the partner promo, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shop window.

How to read the catalogue: the operator column on China plans. One provider can glue several networks depending on the pack. Missing from the list: packs that do not name the mast. Recheck on the day you buy.
