If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China eSIM plan and install it at home. No queue, nothing to return, Google often still reachable if the plan routes off the mainland. A local plastic SIM still helps for a Chinese number, a long stay at a low yuan-per-GB price, or a handset that refuses eSIM. eSIM plans sit on the China comparison. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom shops take yuan, passport in hand, real-name registration.

- Late flight into PEK, PVG or CAN, shop shut. eSIM already on. Do not count on the stand, or on arrivals Wi-Fi to scan a QR.
At Shanghai Pudong, the China Unicom shop is not open for every night landing. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Both ride the same kind of Chinese mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the device takes one, unless you truly need a local number or a yuan rate over three weeks. Hall Wi-Fi does not replace the install: Apple documents that a non-mainland eSIM usually cannot be added once you are in mainland China.
China eSIM: skip the PEK and PVG queue if the phone is compatible
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China plan. Maps (often Apple Maps, or a pack that leaves the firewall), translation, Alipay. No deposit, no nano-SIM swap in a case, no queue at arrivals.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only after you land. Keep the UK line for bank texts.

Handsets sold in mainland China often have two physical SIMs and no eSIM. If you borrow a phone bought on site, the compatibility tool can say no.

When a China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom plastic SIM still wins
Plastic wins in four precise cases.
- You want a Chinese number for an OTP, a hotel or WeChat that refuses a +44.
- The handset is locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- The stay is long and the prepaid price per GB, checked that day, clearly beats the eSIM pack.
- You prefer a shop seller, passport scanned, top-ups in yuan.
Even at 15 days, if every pocket has a recent iPhone and WhatsApp or an eSIM messenger will do: one eSIM per adult, not a nano-SIM “just in case”.
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom sometimes sell a local eSIM in store. The gesture looks like plastic: real-name ID, sometimes a Chinese app. It is not the Airalo QR you scan at home. Budget the shop, not an email at 2 a.m.
A local SIM crosses the firewall. Google, Gmail, Instagram, a lot of news: cut. Plan for that, or keep a travel eSIM on the second profile.
Where to buy a China prepaid SIM (airport, station, city)
Official shops for all three operators sit at arrivals in Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG, SHA), Guangzhou (CAN) and Shenzhen (SZX), often also in the city centre, with shorter hours than the airport. Passport. Skip the unbranded seller in the hall.

Prepaid bundles move. Recheck the shop poster, not a 2025 tariff. A Chinese “unlimited” SIM sometimes throttles hotspot. Read the tethering line.
Hong Kong is not automatic. A China pack on the comparison does not include Taiwan.
China eSIM vs local SIM price for 7 days
A 7-day China eSIM pack is paid per phone, on your card at home, promo deducted. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
The local SIM is paid in yuan, plus sometimes a kit. A voice number has a price. Twenty GB at ¥80 can beat a 5 GB eSIM if you accept the firewall. Three GB of eSIM for a weekend often beat the queue, the change, and Gmail still open.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM plan on the China comparison, against the China Mobile / China Unicom / China Telecom poster that day. As soon as every pocket can take an eSIM and a local number is not required, nano-SIM almost always loses on a short stay.
China eSIM or plastic SIM by itinerary
Shanghai + Beijing, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs, installed at home. No queue at 11 p.m. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the pack writes it.
Need a WeChat OTP + Google data. One official counter SIM for the number. A data eSIM on the same phone (or the second) if you want Gmail without draining the voice SIM. Check the device takes two lines.
Locked work phone. Official plastic SIM, or work-contract roaming if China is truly included. Do not buy a QR the device will refuse. Do not wait until PEK to scan.
How to line up a China eSIM against a China Mobile, Unicom or Telecom counter

- If the phone takes eSIM, open the China page. Filter hotspot only if you share.
- Note the paid price (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
- Stick that total next to the shop poster, same GB and same days. Add a VPN cost if you take a local SIM and you still want Google. Local SIM only wins if you need a number, huge volume, or a phone with no eSIM.
- Off the metros, prefer an eSIM plan that writes China Mobile. A city China Unicom SIM does not catch a China Mobile eSIM on the train.
How to split a China eSIM from a China Mobile, Unicom or Telecom SIM
- Compatibility: the tool first. No = plastic SIM or Pocket WiFi, not a QR.
- Install: possible only before you reach mainland China for a foreign eSIM. Not installed = no travel eSIM, unless a Hong Kong / Macao stop.
- Need a Chinese number: yes = official shop. No = eSIM if the phone takes one.
- Operator column on the China comparison against the counter brand. Read routing too (firewall or not).
- Paid price against that day’s yuan poster. Ignore the struck-through eSIM shop window.
