China eSIM vs Pocket WiFi: price, coverage and the call

If the phone takes eSIM, buy a China plan and install it before you fly. Rent Pocket WiFi only for tablets or a locked handset. GlocalMe, airports, comparison.

In short

If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China eSIM plan: install at home, no deposit, nothing to return. Rent Pocket WiFi only for tablets, a group laptop, or a locked handset. eSIM plans sit on the China comparison. Routers are booked with the rental shops below, not in our table. A local China Mobile MiFi blocks Google like a plastic SIM.

  • Compatible phone, one or two people. eSIM plan, installed before you leave. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
  • Family, each pocket has a recent iPhone or Galaxy. One eSIM per adult. Hotspot only if the pack writes it, for a laptop at night.
  • Tablets, phone with no eSIM. Pocket WiFi rental (GlocalMe, TravelersWifi, airport counter). One eSIM on an adult if you want to stay reachable without the router.
  • Trains, west, villages. eSIM on China Mobile if the phone takes one. Otherwise a router whose listing writes China Mobile.

At Beijing Capital, nobody hands you a NINJA WiFi the way they do at Narita. Here you book Pocket WiFi online, pick it up at a counter (PEK, PVG, CAN) if that option exists, or have it delivered to the hotel. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it at home. Both ride the same kind of Chinese mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the device takes one. The router only comes in if screens remain that cannot.

China eSIM instead of a rented router, if the phone takes one

If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China plan. Maps, translation, payments. No card hold, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes on a night train.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank texts. Arrivals Wi-Fi does not add a foreign eSIM.

Airalo and Holafly cover China too. Off the metros, look for China Mobile on the listing. Network detail sits in best mobile networks in China.

When to rent Pocket WiFi in China

The router wins in three precise cases.

  1. Devices without eSIM (a teenager’s tablet, an old Android) must stay online without draining your phone.
  2. The handset is locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
  3. Four or five screens glued to the same table all day, and nobody wants to hold hotspot.

Even at four, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not a router by default. Hotspot on an unlimited whose daily cap is not printed in GB stays a trap.

Read the routing of the rented plan. A MiFi glued to a local China Mobile SIM crosses the firewall. Gmail dies. A multi-country router (GlocalMe and equivalents) sometimes routes off the mainland: Google can stay. That is not printed on the box. It is printed on the quote.

Where to book Pocket WiFi in China (Beijing, Shanghai)

Rental shops are not in our catalogue. You book on their site, collect at PEK, PVG or CAN if that option is ticked, or take hotel delivery. You return it on departure. Read the network of the rented plan, insurance, and the price if the device is lost. Count on a hold until return.

Shop Network often advertised Pickup Book
GlocalMe (rent or buy) China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom depending on the device; sometimes multi-country routing Delivery, sometimes resale after the stay glocalme.com
TravelersWifi Local network depending on the tier Hotel delivery, rarely walk-in travelerswifi.com
Airport counters / marketplaces Often China Mobile PEK, PVG, CAN if the listing says so Read the real renter in the activity, not the Klook banner

Days often cost from a few pounds to around £15, plus insurance, plus sometimes a minimum stay. Recheck the quote for the same dates, not homepage “unlimited 5G” pages.

A 1 a.m. flight, an eSIM already on, skips waiting for tomorrow’s courier. Hotel delivery is booked before you leave, not in the passport queue.

Klook and marketplaces sometimes resell the same routers. The real renter is written in the activity. Pay the quote, not the “−80%” banner.

China eSIM vs Pocket WiFi rental price for 7 days

A 7-day China eSIM pack is paid per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a city break.

Pocket WiFi is paid per day, plus insurance, plus sometimes a deposit. Five devices on the same router do not multiply the rent. A solo who only opens Maps for an hour still pays the day. Over three days, the frozen deposit often exceeds the rent.

Do the sum once: N times the eSIM plan on the China comparison, against the GlocalMe or TravelersWifi quote for the same dates. As soon as every pocket can take an eSIM, the router almost always loses.

China eSIM or Pocket WiFi by itinerary

Shanghai + Beijing, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No locker. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the pack writes it.

Family, 12 days, two adults on iPhone, two tablets. Two eSIMs for the adults. One Pocket WiFi for the tablets, if they must stay online on the train. Not a router “for everyone” if the teenagers already have a compatible phone. Check the MiFi firewall.

West, phone with no eSIM. Pocket WiFi whose listing writes China Mobile. Do not buy a QR the device cannot swallow. Alternative: local SIM at the counter.

How to compare a China eSIM with a Pocket WiFi quote

Our table ranks eSIMs. It does not list GlocalMe, TravelersWifi or airport counters. Do not look there for a deposit or a counter hour.

  1. If the phone takes eSIM, open the China page. Filter hotspot only if you share to a tablet or a laptop.
  2. Note the paid price (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
  3. Stick that total next to the renter’s quote, same dates. The router only wins if screens without eSIM remain, or if the quote is truly lower.
  4. Off the metros, prefer an eSIM plan that writes China Mobile. A China Unicom Pocket WiFi does not catch a China Mobile eSIM on the train.
  5. Firewall: internationally routed eSIM versus local MiFi. That is not the same internet.

How to stick a China Pocket WiFi quote to the eSIM comparison

  1. Phone compatibility: the tool first. eSIM install: at home, not at PEK.
  2. Open the China page. Operator column, duration, hotspot, routing if the listing says it.
  3. Ask the renter for a quote (written network, deposit, delivery, firewall).
  4. Apply the eSIM partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.

China eSIM and Pocket WiFi sources

  1. China eSIM comparison Price, data, hotspot, operator column. Router renters are not in the table.
  2. Best mobile networks in China China Mobile off the cities, China Unicom and China Telecom in town. Useful once you already picked eSIM or router.
  3. GlocalMe Multi-network router, rent or buy.
  4. TravelersWifi Rental, often hotel delivery.
  5. Apple, eSIM in mainland China Why airport Wi-Fi does not save a forgotten QR.
  6. eSIM-compatible phones If the model is missing or “no”, switch to a router or a plastic SIM.

Renter quotes and eSIM partners move without notice. This text is dated 21 September 2026. Recheck the network, the hotspot and the delivery method on the day you book.
