In short
For a mainland China trip in 2026, buy a China eSIM plan if the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile. Install it at home. In Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu the data is already there: maps, translation, Alipay. Prices and the operator column sit on the China comparison. Hotel Wi-Fi does not replace a line on the train, and it does not save a forgotten QR.
- Compatible phone. One China eSIM, installed before you leave. Check the model in the compatibility tool. China Mobile if you leave the cities.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Local physical SIM at the airport, or Pocket WiFi rental.
- Tablets, several screens without eSIM. Pocket WiFi. One eSIM on an adult so you stay reachable without the router.
- EE, O2, Vodafone or Three day pass. Last minute, one afternoon, a forgotten QR. Over a week the China eSIM almost always wins, unless China is truly included on your line.

At Beijing Capital, arrivals Wi-Fi often wants a Chinese mobile number and a captcha. Meanwhile DiDi and Apple Maps wait. An eSIM you scanned at home attaches as soon as you leave airplane mode. That is the move that skips the SIM shop queue, the surprise of China missing from a “world” plan, and a QR you cannot add once you are on the ground.
China eSIM as the default internet if the phone is compatible
If the device is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China plan. No deposit, no locker, nothing to return. The UK line stays for bank texts. Data rides the eSIM.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in China. In the second case, leave the line off until you land.
The radio that matters is China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom, not the app logo. Off Beijing–Shanghai–Shenzhen, prefer a pack that writes China Mobile. Network detail sits in best mobile networks in China.
Routing matters as much as the mast. A roaming eSIM often leaves the firewall: Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, ChatGPT. A 100% local eSIM, like a plastic SIM, cuts them. Read that line on the listing.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Ubigi sell China: open the plan page (operator, 5G, hotspot), not the brand homepage. An Asia eSIM only works if mainland China is on the country list.

EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming in China
China is not “roam like home”. It sits in rest-of-world / Extra / Zone 1-C style lists, like the USA, not like Switzerland in Europe. Without a pass (or a plan that truly includes China), UK networks sell a day charge, or they block data until you buy one.
| UK operator | If China is not in the plan | Order of magnitude | If you stay on the UK SIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | No extra-EU data until you buy a pass | The day pass, not a per-MB bill | Rest-of-world if China is listed. Daily pass often around £6 if that zone exists. USA Zone 1 is not automatically China. Recheck the app. |
| O2 | Standard roaming unless Travel or Inclusive Zone Ultimate is on the plan | One Travel day if the bolt-on is active | Travel bolt-on is often ~£7/day if China is listed. Shorter Inclusive Zone lists usually skip it. Confirm in My O2. |
| Vodafone | Zone C or D daily fee if Global Roam is not in the plan | One roaming day as soon as data attaches | Often ~£7.86/day on pay-monthly plans started on or after 11 August 2021 (later guides near £8). Check the roaming checker with your number. |
| Three | China is Go Roam Around the World Extra, not Europe | A daily Extra charge, or PAYG if you have no pass | Daily Extra often £7 if you joined or upgraded from 1 October 2021. Plans from 18 December 2025: often £8/day from 1 April 2026. Complete extras can include Extra destinations. Confirm China is on your Extra list. |
These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and the country list change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £6-8 passes is already £42-56. A 7-day eSIM on the China comparison is almost always cheaper, unless China is truly included.
Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Turn data roaming off on that line if you use an eSIM. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.
UK roaming wins in three cases: China is truly in your plan, an unplanned afternoon, a work phone. A Shanghai + Xi’an stay is planned another way if the zone stops at Europe. Day fees, zones and operator cases: China roaming, costs and alternatives.
Local plastic SIM at Beijing, Shanghai or a city shop in China
A local physical SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or you prefer a counter with a passport. China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom still sell prepaid. You wait, you show the passport, you insert the card. Real-name registration.
Compare the counter poster with the China eSIM table before you queue. A 1 a.m. flight often finds the shop shut. An eSIM already in the phone does not depend on the hour.
Same logic as an eSIM: read the network (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) and the hotspot. Add the firewall: Google dies. Queue and local number: China eSIM vs local SIM.
Hotel, station and airport Wi-Fi in China
Chinese Wi-Fi is everywhere in the brochure: hotels, airports, high-speed trains. Captive portals work in the hall, often after a Chinese SMS. They drop between stops, in a taxi, on a trail.
Even connected, the firewall stays. Shanghai hotel Wi-Fi does not magically restore Gmail. Use it to empty photos to a cloud that gets through, or to check a profile already installed. Do not build the stay on it.
Arrivals Wi-Fi at PEK or PVG does not scan a foreign eSIM. Keep an offline QR as a souvenir only: the install happens at home, or in Hong Kong / Macao if you missed the window.
Pocket WiFi in China: which devices need it
Rent a router only if screens without eSIM remain: a teenager’s tablet, an old Android, a locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a hotspot by default.
The eSIM Comparator table ranks eSIM plans. It does not list GlocalMe or TravelersWifi. Router versus eSIM, shops and 7-day maths sit in China eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.
How many GB for a China trip
Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen: you walk with maps, you take the metro, you photograph, you translate menus. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the train, or a laptop stays on hotspot all day. Photo translation eats more than you expect.
3-5 days
5-10 GBShanghai city break. Maps, metro, photos. Hotel Wi-Fi at night.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities, a little video. 15 GB if you doubt.
12-15 days
15-20 GBSeveral provinces. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited whose daily cap and hotspot are printed in GB.
The data calculator tightens the step. Then recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Trains, west: volume matters less than the mast. Unlimited China Unicom in town does not catch a China Mobile hole you avoided. Pick the network first, then the GB.
How to turn on data after landing in Beijing or Shanghai
- Leave airplane mode.
- Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a China profile as roaming even on China Unicom.
- Turn data roaming off on the UK SIM, unless you stay on a plan that truly includes China.
- If nothing attaches: airplane mode thirty seconds, then stop. Only touch APN if the provider listed one.
Failure n°1 remains roaming left off on the travel line. N°2: a still-locked iPhone that installs the QR then shows “No service”. N°3: profile never installed, QR scanned too late. Test compatibility before you pay.
Hong Kong and Macao: if you missed the install, that is where you can still add a mainland eSIM. Not in the PEK hall.
Solo, couple or family: which internet to take to China
Solo, 8 days, unlocked iPhone, Shanghai then Beijing. One China eSIM 10 GB, China Unicom will do. No counter. No EE “world” pass in parallel, unless your plan truly includes China.
Couple, two recent Galaxies, Xi’an and Chengdu. Two eSIMs. Packs that write China Mobile. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the listing says so.
Family, two adults on eSIM, two tablets. Two phone plans. One Pocket WiFi for the tablets if they must stay online on the train. Check the renter’s quote against N times the eSIM price, and the MiFi firewall.
Locked work phone. Local physical SIM, Pocket WiFi, or work-contract roaming if China is truly included. Do not buy a QR the device will refuse.
How to find a China eSIM on the comparison
- Open the China page. Operator column (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) before price per GB.
- Filter duration on real dates, not hotel nights. Install the profile before you leave.
- Tick hotspot if you share to a tablet or a laptop.
- Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
