In short
For a Spain trip in 2026, buy a Spain eSIM plan if the phone is unlocked, takes an eSIM profile, and your UK Europe allowance does not cover Maps, Renfe and hotspot. Install it at home. At Barajas, Sants or the Alhambra, the data is already there. Prices and the operator column sit on the Spain comparison. AVE Wi-Fi does not replace a line off the stations.
- Compatible phone, trip off the cities or a tight fair-use cap. One Spain eSIM. Check the model in the compatibility tool. Movistar if you leave the cities.
- UK pay-monthly with Spain in Europe, short city break. You can stay on EE, O2, Vodafone or Three. Recheck fair use in My EE / My O2 / My Vodafone / Three, not a memory of “unlimited Europe”.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Local plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi rental.
- Tablets, several screens without eSIM. Pocket WiFi. One eSIM on an adult to stay reachable without the router.

At Barajas, arrivals Wi-Fi often wants an email and a captcha. Meanwhile the metro and Google Maps wait. An eSIM you scanned at home attaches as soon as you leave airplane mode. A UK Europe plan does the same, while the allowance holds. The useful move is knowing which of the two lines carries data before the taxi.
Spain eSIM: stay online without the airport portal
If the device is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, a Spain plan is the right tool as soon as you want to pick the mast, protect the UK allowance, or go past fair use. No deposit, no locker, nothing to return. The UK line stays for bank SMS. Data rides the eSIM.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation sentence: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Spain. In the second case, leave the line off until landing.
The radio that matters is Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone, Yoigo or Digi, not the app logo. Off Madrid–Barcelona–Valencia, prefer a pack that writes Movistar. Network detail sits in best mobile networks in Spain.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Ubigi sell Spain: open the plan page (operator, 5G, hotspot), not the brand homepage. A Europe eSIM is enough if Spain is on the list and the Spanish partner suits you. It does not let you pick Movistar as clearly as a country plan.

EE, O2, Vodafone or Three data in Spain
Spain sits in the Europe zone of most UK pay-monthly plans. That is commercial, not EU law binding UK networks after Brexit. Calls, texts and data usually come out of your UK allowance, within fair use. It is not a per-megabyte bill like Morocco.
UK fair use on Europe is often on the order of 25 GB. Recheck your number in the app. For context, EU roam-like-at-home still uses a wholesale cap of €1.10/GB in 2026: a €20 ex-VAT unlimited-style plan yields about 36 GB as a legal floor for EU home SIMs. Your UK figure is the one in My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or Three.
Consequence: a city break with a large Europe allowance often holds without eSIM. The eSIM takes the lead if the Europe fair use is short, if you hotspot a laptop, if you want Movistar named, or if your tariff bills a Europe day instead of inclusive data. Operator detail sits in Spain roaming.
Balearics and Canaries: Spain, and for UK plans usually Europe. Andorra and Gibraltar: outside that frame. Read the list before a side trip.
Plastic SIM at Barajas, El Prat or in town
Plastic SIM helps if the phone has no eSIM, or if you want a +34. Passport. Orange lists Holiday Mini at €25 and Holiday Maxi at €35 incl. VAT (Maxi: 28 days). Airport kiosks can post more. Movistar, Vodafone, Yoigo and Digi also sell. Compare with the table before the queue. How-to sits in Spain eSIM or local SIM.
A flight after 10 p.m. often finds the shop shut. An eSIM installed at home does not depend on that hour.
Renfe, airport and café Wi-Fi: what fails as a Spain line
Airport Wi-Fi, some AVE trains and hotels help. They want a portal, they drop between stations, they are useless on the bus to Ronda or on a ferry. Do not build the stay on them.
| Option | When it is enough | When it drops |
|---|---|---|
| Spain eSIM | Compatible phone, named mast, stay duration | Locked handset, or a plan that skips the islands |
| UK SIM in Europe | City break, large allowance, no need to pick Movistar | Fair use hit, hotspot blocked, inland on a weak partner |
| Local SIM | +34, phone without eSIM, shop open | Night arrival, queue, forgotten passport |
| Pocket WiFi | Tablets, locked handset | One person, one compatible phone: the box is surplus |
| Public Wi-Fi | Hall, hotel, at night | Street, bus, road, platform without a portal |
How many GB for Barcelona, Andalusia or the islands
Volumes match maps + messages + a little video. The data calculator tightens it. If you stay on the UK SIM, compare this tier with the fair use shown in the app, not marketing “unlimited”.
3-5 days
5-10 GBBarcelona or Madrid. Maps, metro, photos. Hotel Wi-Fi at night.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities, a little video. 15 GB tier if you doubt.
12-15 days
15-20 GBAndalusia or islands. 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited whose daily cap and hotspot are printed in GB.
Off the cities, volume matters less than the mast. A big plan on a weak partner does not fill a hole. Pick the network first, then the GB.
Activate a Spain eSIM before Madrid or Barcelona
- Install on Wi-Fi at home. Screenshot the QR in case the email vanishes.
- At arrival, leave airplane mode.
- Mobile data line: the eSIM if you bought one. Otherwise the UK SIM, data roaming on.
- If both are on, turn data roaming off on the line you do not want billed.
- A profile that will not attach: reread the activation sentence (scan or first Spanish network), then airplane mode for thirty seconds.
How to pick Spain internet on the comparison table
- Note Europe fair use in My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or Three. If it covers the GB tier and the stay is urban, you can stop there.
- Otherwise open the Spain comparison. Operator column before price. Movistar if you leave the cities.
- Hotspot only if the laptop needs it. Otherwise do not pay for it.
- Promo code, then paid price. Ignore the struck-through rate.
