In short
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Spain eSIM plan: install at home, no queue, nothing to return. A local plastic SIM still helps for a +34 number, a long stay at a low price per GB, or a handset that refuses eSIM. eSIM plans sit on the Spain comparison. Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone and Yoigo shops take euros, passport in hand.
- Compatible phone, city break or classic circuit. eSIM. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Need to call a hotel or restaurant on a local line. Official prepaid SIM. Travel eSIMs are often data only.
- Three weeks, big volume, tight budget. Compare the counter price per GB with the eSIM table before you queue.
- Late flight into MAD or BCN, shop shut. eSIM already on. Do not bank on the kiosk.

At Madrid-Barajas, the SIM kiosk is not the same in T1 and T4, and the terminals are far apart. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Both land on the same kind of Spanish mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the device takes one, unless you truly need a Spanish number or a local rate over three weeks.
Spain travel eSIM: buy before you queue at Barajas
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Spain plan. Maps, Renfe, TMB, translation. No deposit, no nano-SIM swap in a case, no queue at Atocha on arrival day.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank codes.
Airalo and Holafly cover Spain: open the plan page (network, 5G, hotspot) before you pay, not the brand homepage. Off the big cities, look for Movistar on the operator line. Network detail sits in best mobile networks in Spain.

When a local Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or Yoigo SIM still wins
Plastic wins in four precise cases.
- You want a +34 number to call a hotel, restaurant or Airbnb without WhatsApp.
- The handset is locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- The stay is long and the prepaid price per GB, checked on the day, clearly beats the eSIM pack.
- You prefer a shop seller, passport scanned, top-ups in euros.
Even at 15 days, if every pocket has a recent iPhone and WhatsApp is enough: one eSIM per adult, not a nano-SIM “just in case”.
Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone, Yoigo and Digi also sell local eSIM. The gesture looks like plastic: ID, sometimes a customer account. That is not the Airalo QR you scan at home.
O2 España (Movistar radio), Lowi (Vodafone), Pepephone and MásMóvil (MásOrange side) stay resident prepaid. Read the host network, not only the kit price. Digi often wants an address and ID: fine for a long stay, painful off the plane.
Where to buy a Spain prepaid SIM at MAD, BCN or in town
Official shops sit around Madrid-Barajas arrivals (especially T4) and Barcelona-El Prat, plus high streets. Passport or ID: Spanish prepaid is registered. Skip the unsigned seller in the hall. A kiosk can post a rate above the operator’s own page.
| Channel | What you buy | ID | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport shop Orange, Movistar, Vodafone, Yoigo | Prepaid, sometimes local eSIM | Passport | MAD T1 and T4 are not equal. BCN T1 is the busiest. Hours vary at night |
| Orange España Holiday page | Holiday Mini €25, Holiday Maxi €35 incl. VAT | Depends on the channel | Maxi listed for 28 days, data in Spain, 100 minutes. Mini duration is on the page. Recheck |
| Town (operator or big-box store) | Same prepaid, sometimes cheaper than the hall | Passport | Useful the next day, useless if Maps must work off the taxi |
| Travel eSIM before the flight | Data, sometimes hotspot, rarely a +34 | None at a counter | The network is the one written on the listing, not “Spain” in general |
These Orange prices were checked on orange.es in September 2026. The airport kiosk does not have to match them. Compare with the eSIM table before you pay €35 for a volume you will not finish in five days.
Orange Holiday Mini and Maxi versus a Spain eSIM pack
Holiday Maxi at €35 for 28 days with data in Spain and 100 minutes makes sense if you call locally and stay three weeks. For five days of maps and messages, a 5 or 10 GB eSIM pack is often the tighter fit. Classic Orange prepaid (10, 15 or 20 € / 28 days tiers on prepago.orange.es) aims more at residents, with a separate EU allowance: you are in Spain, that EU allowance is not your local data.
Movistar and Vodafone also publish prepaid. Gigabytes and minutes move. Open the page on the day, or the shop sheet. Do not buy an “unlimited” whose speed drops after an unwritten cap.
On the eSIM side, the test is not only price per GB. It is the network name, 5G, hotspot, and a duration that covers the flight home. An unlimited without hotspot does not replace a router. A pack that does not name the mast leaves you on the partner of the day.
+34 number, hotspot and a locked phone in Spain
A travel eSIM covers Maps, tickets, translation, messaging. It usually does not give a Spanish number for an inbound hotel call. If the lodging needs a +34, take the local SIM, or ask whether WhatsApp is enough. Many hotels accept the second.
Hotspot is written or missing on the eSIM listing. If it is missing, do not count on it for a laptop. Local plastic often allows it, within the prepaid fair use. Check the line, not the slogan.
Operator-locked phone: neither a travel eSIM nor a Spanish SIM activates while the lock holds. Pocket WiFi is then the workaround, not a second shop queue.
Three Spain trips: pick eSIM or plastic
Madrid + Toledo, 4 days, recent iPhone. eSIM. Nothing to register at Barajas. Movistar or Orange España on the listing.
Family, three weeks, calls to restaurants. One Orange Holiday SIM or a Movistar / Vodafone equivalent if the +34 truly helps, after sticking the price next to the eSIM table. Other compatible phones stay on eSIM.
Phone without eSIM, 11 p.m. arrival. Do not bet on an open shop. Either you have an eSIM (so the phone takes one), or you booked a router to the hotel. Detail in Spain eSIM or Pocket WiFi.
How to compare Spain eSIM and a counter SIM before you pay
- If the compatibility tool says yes and WhatsApp is enough: stay on the Spain table. Operator column before price.
- If you need a +34 or a 28-day volume at Orange Holiday prices: note €25 or €35, then the eSIM total on the same dates. The cheaper one that names Movistar or Orange wins.
- Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before MAD, BCN or AGP. Plastic SIM is bought after the passport, not in the taxi.
- Apply the promo, then read the paid price.
