If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Spain eSIM plan: install at home, no deposit, nothing to return. Rent Pocket WiFi only for tablets, a group laptop, or a locked handset. eSIM plans sit on the Spain comparison. Routers are booked with rental firms, not in our table.

At Barajas, nobody hands you a router the way Narita does. Pocket WiFi in Spain is booked online and delivered to the hotel, sometimes a locker. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it at home. Both land on the same kind of mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the device takes one. The router only enters if screens remain that cannot.
Spain eSIM for one unlocked phone on the trip
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Spain plan. Maps, Renfe, translation. No card hold, no locker, no invoice if a box vanishes on the AVE.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank codes.

When renting Pocket WiFi in Spain beats four eSIMs
The router wins in three cases.
- Tablets or a laptop must stay online together, and the phones do not share (hotspot missing from the listing, or banned by the plan).
- The handset is locked or has no eSIM, and a local SIM is awkward (night flight, shop shut).
- You are a group where some phones refuse the profile, and one shared radio is enough.
It loses as soon as every adult has a compatible phone. Four eSIMs do not vanish in a taxi. A box can. The deposit stays on the card until return, sometimes after.
The router uses Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone, Yoigo or Digi, depending on the rental firm. Ask for the name before you pay. A “Spain 4G” without an operator is the same fog as an eSIM without a network column. Off the cities, Movistar first, same as for eSIM.
Where to pick up a Spain Pocket WiFi in Madrid or Barcelona
Expect hotel delivery, a pickup point, or an agreed collection. It is not a counter open at every night landing into MAD, BCN, AGP or PMI. Book before the flight. Read late-return fees, and the plug: the USB charger empties in a day if everyone streams.

Rental prices move with the season (Holy Week, August, long weekends). Ask for a dated 7-day quote. Stick it next to one eSIM per adult on the Spain comparison. The router is not “unlimited” in the sense of a stable speed on a packed AVE.
Family, AVE and islands: who carries Spain data
Two adults, compatible phones, 7 days. Two eSIMs. Hotspot from one at night, if the listing writes it, for a laptop. No box in the bag.
Parents without eSIM, kids with tablets. A router whose listing names Movistar if you leave Barcelona. Plus one eSIM on the phone that can take it, so you stay reachable when the box is at the hotel.
Madrid–Seville on the AVE, then the coast. Tunnel and countryside matter more than screen count. Movistar on the eSIM, or the same name from the rental firm. Digi’s urban 5G does not fill a hole between stations.
The Balearics and the Canaries sit on Spanish networks. A “Spain” pack usually covers them. Read the list: a Europe eSIM that skips the islands, or a “mainland only” router, leaves Palma or Tenerife without data. Andorra and Gibraltar are not in the Spain pack.

How to choose Spain eSIM or a rented router before takeoff
- Run every phone through the compatibility tool. All yes: eSIM, one per adult.
- If tablets or a locked handset remain: 7-day router quote, named network, deposit, pickup place. Next to it, the eSIM total for phones that can.
- On the Spain comparison, filter hotspot if a laptop must ride a phone. Otherwise the router carries that screen.
- Promo code, then paid price. The router has no code in our table: it is another contract.
