In short
Spain sits in the Europe zone of most EE, O2, Vodafone and Three pay-monthly plans. That inclusion is commercial, not EU law forcing UK networks. Data usually comes out of your UK allowance within fair use (often on the order of 25 GB). Buy a Spain eSIM if the phone takes one and the allowance does not cover the trip, you want a named mast, the plan bills a Europe day, or UK hotspot is off abroad. Otherwise keep the UK line, data roaming on that SIM only.
- City break, plan with Spain in Europe and enough fair use. Stay on the UK SIM. Recheck My EE / My O2 / My Vodafone / Three before you fly.
- Short fair use, two weeks, laptop hotspot, or Movistar wanted. Spain plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Fair use already used, or a tariff that bills a Europe day. Stacked day charges add up. An eSIM is often simpler to budget. Recheck the app; do not invent a pound figure from a forum.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The “welcome to Spain” text often lands before the bags. On a UK Europe line it mostly confirms the SIM is roaming in Europe. It does not say how many gigabytes of fair use you have left, or which Spanish mast you land on. An eSIM you scanned at home helps when that leftover is tight, or when you want Movistar rather than your operator’s partner. For a Barcelona weekend on a large Europe allowance, the UK SIM is enough.
How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Spain
On most pay-monthly Europe lists, Spain is included. You spend UK GB within fair use. Fifteen megabytes is a generous hour of maps. It does not become a three-figure bill the way an unpassed rest-of-world destination can.
| UK operator | Inside Europe inclusion | If fair use is gone or Europe is not inclusive | What to read in the app |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | Spain is usually in the EE Europe zone. Inclusive plans: UK allowance. Some later pay-monthly tariffs bill a Europe day instead | A Europe day charge for the dates, or no data until you buy one, depending on the tariff | Europe GB left, hotspot abroad, Andorra/Gibraltar which are not Spain. Recheck My EE |
| O2 | Pay-monthly Europe Zone usually lists Spain. Fair use often around 25 GB | Beyond the cap, the plan’s own rules. PAYG is a different logic | Your exact line in My O2, not “Europe” from an ad. Small PAYG buckets hold a weekend, not two weeks of video |
| Vodafone | Spain is usually in the standard Europe / Euro Roam list on pay-monthly, not rest-of-world | If Europe is not on the plan, a Europe day or Europe pass for the dates. Recheck the roaming checker with your number | Do not paste a Switzerland Zone B day onto Spain. Confirm Spain is listed as Europe on your line |
| Three | Spain is usually Go Roam in Europe, not Around the World Extra | Without Europe inclusion: a Europe pass or an eSIM. Complete / Europe-inclusive: stay on the UK SIM | Three app. Your neighbour’s Complete volume is not yours |
These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extras and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Spain on the peninsula, Balearics and Canaries is normally Europe. Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco are not.
Europe fair use on a UK plan in Spain
UK networks set their own Europe fair-use caps. A figure on the order of 25 GB is common on pay-monthly; your app shows the one that applies. Recheck before you count on two weeks of video.
For context only: EU roam-like-at-home still uses a wholesale cap of €1.10/GB in 2026. Twice the monthly ex-VAT price divided by that cap gives a legal floor for many EU home SIMs (example: €20 ex-VAT ≈ 36 GB). That formula does not replace the number in My EE or My O2. Your Europe leftover is the figure that matters for a UK SIM.
After you hit the UK fair-use cap, the operator applies its own surcharge or throttle rules. That is still usually cheaper than rest-of-world day stacking, but a 10 or 20 GB Spain eSIM is often clearer to budget, especially if you hotspot.
Permanent-abroad style rules (days outside the UK in a rolling window) still exist on some lines. A one-week holiday is not that case. A month working from Valencia can be. Then an eSIM, or a local SIM, leaves the “UK Europe holiday” frame.
When a Spain eSIM still beats the UK Europe allowance
Four cases, not a slogan.
- The Europe fair use shown is under the GB tier for the stay (maps, Renfe, a little video).
- You want Movistar (inland, trains, islands) and UK roaming lands on another partner. The name is on the eSIM listing, not on the EE or Three contract.
- Hotspot is off abroad on your line, and a laptop must ride.
- You keep UK data for the flight home, and the trip has its own line.
If none of those four hold, stay on the UK SIM. Buying an eSIM “just in case” on top of 80 GB of Europe already included is paying twice for Maps.
Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi sell Spain. Open the listing (operator, 5G, hotspot). A Europe eSIM replaces a Spain pack only if Spain is listed and the partner suits you.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Spain
Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.
- Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
- If you have an eSIM: turn it on and set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Spain profile as roaming even on Movistar.
- Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
- If you stay on the UK plan: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.
Failure #1: burning fair use on day one with both lines open, then paying the rest as surcharge or day charges.
Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other Spain roaming alternatives
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or if you want a +34. Orange Holiday Maxi is €35 for 28 days on orange.es (September 2026). Compare with the Spain eSIM table before the queue. Detail: Spain eSIM or local SIM.
Rent Pocket WiFi only if screens without eSIM remain. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult if the UK allowance is short, not a hotspot by default. Spain eSIM or Pocket WiFi.
Hotel or station Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops on the bus.
How many GB for a Spain trip without burning fair use
Compare these tiers with the figure in the app. If they fit inside, the UK SIM is enough for data. If they overflow, move to an eSIM of that volume.
3-5 days
5-10 GBCity break. Maps, metro. Hotel Wi-Fi at night. Often fits Europe fair use.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities, a little video. Watch leftover fair use, not the whole plan.
12-15 days
15-20 GBAndalusia, islands. A small Europe fair-use cap is often under this tier: eSIM.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited eSIM whose daily cap and hotspot are printed in GB.
The data calculator tightens the tier. Off the cities, the network matters as much as the volume.
How to compare a UK Europe zone and a Spain eSIM
- Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app. Note Europe GB left and whether hotspot roams. Confirm Spain is listed as Europe on your line.
- Open the Spain page. Operator column (Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Yoigo, Digi) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
- If Europe GB covers the stay and you do not need Movistar named: stay on the UK SIM.
- Otherwise stick the totals together. Apply the promo, then read the paid price.
