Which network to use in Spain with a travel eSIM

Movistar for speed and reliability off the cities, Orange España close behind, Digi for pure 5G. Which eSIM plans land on them, per Opensignal May 2026.

In short

An Airalo, Holafly or Ubigi eSIM rides a Spanish network: Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone, Yoigo or Digi. Pick the network for the trip, then a plan that prints that name, not just a Spain flag. Prices and the operator column sit on the Spain comparison.

  • Inland Andalusia, trains, islands, roads off the motorway. Movistar. Compare packs that write Movistar.
  • Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga only. Movistar or Orange España will do. Airalo, Holafly, Saily on the same page.
  • Spain then Portugal, France or Italy. A Spain pack plus a local one, or a Europe eSIM if Spain is listed. Check the regional pack’s Spanish partner.
  • Compatible phone. Take an eSIM rather than plastic as soon as the listing names the network. Check the model in the compatibility tool.

The QR code does not radiate at Barajas. Movistar, Orange España, Vodafone, Yoigo and Digi do. A travel eSIM is wholesale capacity glued onto one of those radios. Between Gran Vía and a Ronda platform, the local mast decides if Maps, Renfe and check-in hold. Not the app logo.

This ranks networks for a visitor, not a Spanish subscriber. Showcase 5G speeds weigh less than a hole between two villages. Figures come from Opensignal’s May 2026 report (1 January to 31 March 2026). eSIM partners move: open the operator column on the Spain comparison before you pay.

Orange España and Yoigo sit in the MásOrange group. Opensignal still measures them apart. A listing that writes Orange is not a Yoigo listing. Digi builds its own network: it is no longer only an MVNO on Movistar. Read the name, not the merger press release.

Roaming on a UK Europe plan lands on your operator’s partner. You do not pick Movistar. An eSIM that writes the network does. That is when the travel plan wins, even when Spain is already in your Europe allowance.

What “best mobile network in Spain” means here

Opensignal does not hand out one overall league table. In May 2026, Movistar (Telefónica) takes 10 outright awards and 3 joint ones: download (96.7 Mbps), upload (15.3 Mbps), consistent quality (81%), reliability (915/1000). Orange España is second on download (66.8 Mbps) and shares with Movistar time on network (98.8 to 98.9%) and 5G availability (83.8 to 84.2%). Vodafone sticks close on reliability (913) but drops to 37.7 Mbps download. Yoigo sits at 45.1 Mbps and 900/1000. Digi wins pure 5G (260.4 Mbps down, 30.4 Mbps up) and finishes last on reliability (844). For a traveller, the useful order is not the 5G café test in the Eixample.

Trip rank Network Where it helps Typical weak spot
1 Movistar 10 outright awards. 96.7 Mbps. Reliability 915/1000. Cities, inland, trains, Balearics, Canaries Not always the partner behind a cheap travel eSIM. Pure 5G a notch under Digi (241.7 Mbps)
2 Orange España 66.8 Mbps. Reliability 909. Time on network and 5G often on, joint with Movistar. Big cities Less margin once the itinerary leaves the corridor. Do not confuse it with Orange France
3 Vodafone Reliability 913, very close to Movistar. Video 68.7. Cities and busy coasts Average download 37.7 Mbps, last in the report. Fine for Maps, short for long video
4 Yoigo 45.1 Mbps. Consistent quality 77.6%. Madrid, Barcelona, coast if the listing names it MásOrange brand, radio still distinct from Orange. Less convincing off the cities
5 Digi Fastest 5G in the report: 260.4 Mbps down. Useful if the stay is 100% urban and the listing writes Digi Reliability 844. All-tech download 39.8 Mbps. Rare on travel eSIMs

Opensignal’s coverage metric scores the footprint where people live and move. A trail past the last village does not sit in Movistar’s 915. Sources at the bottom.

1. Movistar: the safety net outside Madrid and Barcelona

Movistar wins most of the daily experience: download, consistent quality, reliability, video (70.8). That is the first test if the stay leaves the Madrid–Barcelona–Valencia triangle: inland Andalusia, Extremadura, night trains, islands, secondary roads.

For a visitor, Movistar means fewer holes between stations. Not the smoothest TikTok on the Rambla. eSIMs that name Movistar are the default as soon as the stay is not 100% urban.

Ubigi, GigSky and some Nomad packs sometimes publish Movistar. That is not a forever contract. Read the plan page, not a 2024 blog.

2. Orange España: the big-city radio

Orange España (MásOrange, not Orange France) follows on download and shares time on network. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, the metro: Orange España is often the partner behind travel eSIMs. Reliability (909) stays in the same group as Movistar and Vodafone.

Inland and thin coasts stay behind Movistar. A Barcelona + Sitges weekend: Orange España. An Andalusia loop plus a Balearics ferry: Movistar first.

On our Spain comparison, Orange is not rare. You see it on Airalo, Holafly, Saily, sometimes Orange Travel. The plan’s operator line matters more than the app brand. If the listing only says “Orange” without a country, open the detail: an Orange France roam route is not Orange España radio.

3. Vodafone: high reliability, lower average download

Vodafone Spain (still branded Vodafone after the sale to Zegona) finishes at 913/1000 on reliability, three points under Movistar. Average download (37.7 Mbps) is the lowest of the five. Maps, Renfe, messages: it holds in town. A film on the AVE, much less.

Take Vodafone if the eSIM listing writes Vodafone and the stay stays urban or coastal. Do not assume reliability fills a download hole once you leave the motorway.

4. Yoigo: still a separate brand

Yoigo sits in MásOrange, with Orange España. The May 2026 report treats it apart: 45.1 Mbps, reliability 900, consistent quality 77.6%. Site integration is moving. For a visitor, the two brands remain two lines.

eSIM listings name Yoigo less often than Orange or Movistar. Yesim, Roamless and some Orange Travel packs write it sometimes. Only chase Yoigo if the provider writes it, and mainly for a city break.

5. Digi: fastest 5G, shortest safety net

Digi takes both 5G speed awards (260.4 Mbps down, 30.4 Mbps up) and shares 5G video with Movistar. The rest of the report puts it behind: 39.8 Mbps all technologies, reliability 844, consistent quality 74%, 5G availability 77.2% of the time against about 84% for Movistar and Orange.

Useful if you stream in a neighbourhood where Digi already has sites, and if the listing writes Digi. Outside that box, Movistar first. Travel eSIMs still name Digi rarely. Recheck on the day you buy.

Everyday MVNOs (O2 España on Movistar, Lowi on Vodafone, Pepephone and MásMóvil on the MásOrange side) are not extra radios. They borrow one of the five. A resident SIM is not a travel eSIM.

Which eSIM provider maps to which Spain network?

The shop window is not the mast. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi, Yesim resell capacity. Orange Travel often routes as roaming: the listing may say “Orange” without naming Movistar. A “Europe” pack can land on a weaker radio than a country plan.

Three Spain itineraries, three network picks

Barcelona + Sitges, 5 days, 10 GB. Almost any serious 4G/5G plan attaches. Take a pack that names Movistar or Orange España, with hotspot if you share to a laptop. Orange España is enough. Movistar does not fail.

Seville, Ronda, Granada, trains. Movistar first. An unlimited whose daily cap is not printed in GB is a trap: after the cap, Digi’s urban 5G no longer helps on the road.

Spain then Portugal. Compare a Spain pack plus a small Portugal pack against a Europe eSIM. The regional wins on simplicity only if both countries are on the list. Otherwise you buy two plans. Measurable on both listings, not on a “30 countries” slogan. Andorra and Gibraltar are not Spain: read the list.

How to pick a Spain eSIM network on the comparison

  1. Operator column (Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Yoigo, Digi) before price per GB.
  2. 5G and hotspot: an unlimited without hotspot is a phone plan, not a share to a laptop.
  3. Activation: first attach in Spain, or QR scan at home. Install on Wi-Fi before Madrid (MAD), Barcelona (BCN) or Málaga (AGP). Turn data roaming on on the eSIM only.
  4. Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.

Spain network by provider

How to read the catalogue: the operator column on Spain plans. One provider can land on several networks by plan. Missing from the list: packs that do not name the mast. Recheck on the day you buy.
