Internet in Egypt: how do you stay online in 2026?

In Cairo, arrivals Wi-Fi often wants an email and a captcha. Meanwhile the transfer and Google Maps are waiting. An eSIM you scanned at home attaches as soon as you leave airplane mode. That is the gesture that skips the SIM kiosk queue and the surprise of out-of-bundle roaming.

Egypt eSIM: stay online in Cairo, Luxor and on the Red Sea

If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy an Egypt plan. No deposit, no locker, nothing to return. The home line stays for bank texts. Data goes through the eSIM.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at the scan, others at the first connection in Egypt. In the second case, leave the line off until you land.

The radio that counts is WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes WE or Vodafone Egypt. Networks are in best mobile networks in Egypt.

EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming in Egypt

Egypt is not “roam like home”. Without a travel pass, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell a day charge or block data until you buy one. A week of Maps at a daily rate already beats most 7-day Egypt eSIMs.

The pass is for an afternoon or a forgotten QR. Over 7 days of maps, the eSIM plan almost always wins, unless your line already writes Egypt. Orders of magnitude are in Egypt roaming.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and codes. Turn data roaming off on that SIM. If both lines consume, the UK bill comes back.

A physical SIM in Cairo, Hurghada or Luxor

Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt and WE run kiosks at CAI, often at HRG, SSH and LXR. Passport. The price per GB can be low. The queue, the cash and the booth hours are not.

Hotel, café and Nile-boat Wi-Fi

Hotel Wi-Fi is for dumping photos in the evening, or installing a forgotten profile. It drops in the far room, on the boat deck, and between two temples. Do not build the trip on it.

Arrivals Wi-Fi at CAI is for activating an eSIM if you could not do it at home. Keep the QR offline (a screenshot, a downloaded email). A captive portal often cuts the scan halfway.

Pocket WiFi in Egypt: which devices

Rent a router only if some screens have no eSIM: a tablet, an old Android, a locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a Pocket WiFi by default.

How many GB for a stay in Egypt

Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada: you walk with Maps, you take photos, you translate menus. The cards match maps plus messages plus a little video. Add a step if you stream in the evening, or if a laptop stays on hotspot all day.

The data calculator tightens the step. Then recheck duration: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Upper Egypt and desert tracks: volume matters less than the mast. Pick the network first, then the GB.

Turn data on after landing in Cairo

1. Airplane mode off. Plane Wi-Fi already off.
2. Home line: data roaming off. eSIM line: data roaming on, mobile data on that line.
3. If the plan starts at first attach, wait a minute. Test Maps (one neighbourhood, not an hour of navigation) before you leave the hall.
4. If nothing attaches: was the QR installed, or only paid for? Does the plan name WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt? The comparison says so. The arrivals hall does not guess.

Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh use the same gesture. A domestic flight from Cairo to Luxor does not need a second eSIM.

Solo, couple or family: what internet to bring to Egypt

Alone, compatible phone. One eSIM. That is the simple case.

A couple, two recent phones. Two eSIMs. Sharing one pack fails as soon as you split up at the temple.

A family, mixed ages. An eSIM on every compatible adult. Pocket WiFi or a local SIM for the rest. Not the other way around.

Egypt, then Greece or Jordan. Two plans, or a regional only if both countries are on the list. Egypt sits on Africa pages. Greece is Europe. Jordan is the Middle East.
