If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy an Egypt eSIM: install at home, no deposit, nothing to return. Rent a Pocket WiFi only for tablets, a group laptop, or a locked phone. eSIM plans are on the Egypt comparison. Routers are booked with rental shops, not in our table.
- Compatible phone, one or two people. An eSIM plan. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- A family, each person on a recent iPhone or Galaxy. One eSIM per adult. Hotspot only if the pack writes it, for a laptop in the evening.
- Tablets, a phone with no eSIM. A Pocket WiFi delivered to the hotel or picked up on arrival. One eSIM on an adult if you want to stay reachable without the router.
- The Nile, Upper Egypt, off the resort. An eSIM on WE or Vodafone Egypt if the phone takes one. Otherwise a router whose sheet names the same network.
In Cairo nobody hands you a router at the belt the way Narita does. Pocket WiFi is booked online, delivered to the hotel, sometimes collected at the airport. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it at home. Both ride the same kind of Egyptian mast: WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt. Take the eSIM as soon as the phone accepts one. The router comes in only if some screens cannot.
An Egypt eSIM rather than a router, if the phone takes one
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy an Egypt plan. Maps, translation, Uber. No card deposit, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes in a souk.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only. Keep the home line for bank codes.

When to rent a Pocket WiFi in Egypt
The router wins in three cases.
- You still have tablets or an old phone that cannot take an eSIM, and you do not want one plastic SIM per device.
- The main phone is locked to a carrier.
- A group shares one navigation screen, and nobody wants to manage four plans. Even then, an eSIM on one adult keeps you online if the router stays at the hotel.
A family where every pocket has a recent phone buys one eSIM per adult. Evening hotspot, only if the pack writes it. A router “just in case” adds a deposit, a battery, and an object you must not leave on the boat.
Where to book a Pocket WiFi in Cairo, Hurghada or Luxor
There is no single counter at CAI. Rental shops deliver in Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, sometimes Luxor, with a deposit and a return date. Read the printed network (Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, WE), the GB cap, and the price if the device does not come back.

The router does not invent a mast. If it sits on Orange Egypt, it has Orange Egypt’s speed (13.8 Mbps on average in Opensignal, February 2026), not WE’s (25.5 Mbps). Ask for the network name before you pay the deposit.
Egypt eSIM price and a Pocket WiFi rental for 7 days
Over 7 days, one eSIM per phone almost always beats the rental: no deposit, no missed return day. Pocket WiFi can win if three devices with no eSIM share one plan, and if the quote (rental plus tied-up deposit plus delivery) stays under three eSIM packs. Add it up with real quotes, not a “from” price.
eSIM or Pocket WiFi by Egypt itinerary
A couple, Cairo and Luxor. Two eSIMs. Leave the router at home.
A family, one compatible phone, two tablets. One eSIM on the adult, a Pocket WiFi for the tablets if hotspot is not in the pack. If hotspot is written, test it for an evening before you rent.

- Count the screens without eSIM. If there are none, stop the router quote.
- On the Egypt comparison, filter hotspot if you want to share. Operator column: WE or Vodafone Egypt off the resort.
- On the rental quote: days, GB, network, delivery, deposit, loss fee. Convert to your currency.
- If the totals are close: eSIM. You have nothing to hand back at the airport on the way home.
