Which network to use in Egypt with a travel eSIM

WE for speed and consistency, Vodafone Egypt for the 5G that is on most often, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt in town. Which eSIM plans land on them, per Opensignal February 2026.

In short

An Airalo, Holafly or Orange Travel eSIM rides an Egyptian network: WE (Telecom Egypt), Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt. Pick the network for the trip, then a plan that prints that name, not just an Egypt flag. Prices and the operator column sit on the Egypt comparison.

  • Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, the Nile road. WE first if the listing writes it. Otherwise Vodafone Egypt.
  • Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh only. Vodafone Egypt or Orange Egypt will do. Airalo, Holafly, Saily on the same page.
  • Egypt, then Jordan, the UAE or Greece. An Egypt pack plus a local one, or an Africa eSIM if Egypt is on the list. Jordan is not in that Africa plan.
  • Compatible phone. Take an eSIM rather than plastic as soon as the listing names the network. Check the model in the compatibility tool.

The QR code does not radiate in Cairo. WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt do. A travel eSIM is wholesale capacity glued onto one of those four. Between the museum and a road south of Luxor, the local mast decides if Maps, Uber and translation hold. Not the app logo.

This ranks networks for a visitor, not an Egyptian subscriber. Showcase 5G speeds weigh less than a hole between Luxor and Aswan. Figures come from Opensignal’s February 2026 report (1 November 2025 to 29 January 2026). Commercial 5G started in June 2025: 5G coverage scores still sit between 0.4 and 1.3 out of 10. eSIM partners move: open the operator column on the Egypt comparison before you pay.

e& Egypt is the former Etisalat Misr. Read e& Egypt on the plan. Orange Egypt is not Orange France. Vodafone Egypt is not Vodafone UK. WE is Telecom Egypt’s mobile brand.

What “best mobile network in Egypt” means here

Opensignal does not hand out one overall winner for every job. In February 2026, WE takes Best Network: seven outright awards (video, games, voice apps, download, upload, consistent quality, reliability) plus a shared win for time on network. Average download 25.5 Mbps. Reliability 789/1000. Consistent quality 59.2%. Vodafone Egypt leads 5G coverage (1.3/10) and time on 5G (9.6%). e& Egypt leads 5G download (75.8 Mbps) when you are actually on 5G. Orange Egypt shares time on network (97.7%) and finishes last on overall download (13.8 Mbps). For a traveller, downtown Cairo 5G is the wrong order.

Trip rank Network Strength on a route Typical weak spot
1 WE Best Network. 25.5 Mbps down. Reliability 789. Consistent quality 59.2%. Cairo, Alexandria, Nile cities 5G coverage 0.4/10. Not always the partner on cheap travel eSIMs
2 Vodafone Egypt 5G on 37.5% of the time. Time on 5G 9.6%. Download 17.3 Mbps. Red Sea resorts, tourist kiosks 5G still thin (1.3/10). 5G download 57.3 Mbps, behind the other three
3 Orange Egypt Time on network 97.7%, tied with WE. Present in cities and on tourist corridors. Often named on a travel eSIM Last on overall download (13.8 Mbps) and upload (3.7 Mbps)
4 e& Egypt 5G at 75.8 Mbps. 5G video, games and voice. Useful if the listing writes it and you stay in a 5G pocket 5G coverage 0.5/10. Time on network 96.2%, a step under WE and Orange Egypt

Opensignal’s coverage metric scores the footprint where people live, work and travel. It does not score empty desert. A track toward Bahariya is not inside WE’s 25.5 Mbps. Sources are at the bottom.

1. WE: the steadiest experience in Cairo and on the Nile

WE wins the everyday experience: speed, consistency, reliability, video (60.3, the only Good score). That is the first criterion if the stay stays in cities: Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan. Maps and translation hold better at 25.5 Mbps than at 13.8.

For a visitor, WE means fewer stutters in town. It does not mean national 5G. The 5G coverage score is the lowest in the report (0.4/10). Buy WE for useful 4G, not for a 5G badge.

eSIMs that name WE are the default as soon as the listing writes it. That pairing is not a permanent contract. Read the operator line.

2. Vodafone Egypt: 5G that is on most often

Vodafone Egypt keeps 5G coverage (1.3/10) and 5G availability (37.5%). Time actually spent on 5G is still short: 9.6%. In town, the speed gap with WE shows up on a test more than on Maps. Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, central Cairo: Vodafone Egypt is often the travel-eSIM partner, and the most visible kiosk on arrival.

Roads off the resort and Upper Egypt are a 4G test, not a 5G one. A Red Sea hotel weekend: Vodafone Egypt. A Nile circuit plus desert: WE first if the plan names it, otherwise Vodafone Egypt rather than a plan that names nobody.

On our Egypt comparison, Vodafone Egypt is common. You see it on Airalo, Holafly, Saily, sometimes as a pair. The operator line matters more than the app brand.

3. Orange Egypt: present, slower on overall speed

Orange Egypt shares time on network with WE (97.7% versus 97.8%). You are often attached. Speed is the lowest in the report: 13.8 Mbps down, 3.7 Mbps up. Consistent quality improved. Speeds went the other way.

Maps in Cairo holds. Sending photos from the Valley of the Kings is where you feel 13.8 Mbps. Travel eSIMs name Orange Egypt fairly often, including Orange Travel. Look for it only if the provider writes it. Do not confuse it with a French Orange pass.

4. e& Egypt: 5G speed when you are actually on it

e& Egypt leads 5G download (75.8 Mbps), ahead of WE (72.5) and Orange Egypt (70.6). Vodafone Egypt sits at 57.3 Mbps on 5G, even though its users spend the most time there. e& Egypt 5G is fast and still rare: coverage 0.5/10, availability 29.3%.

Take e& Egypt only if the eSIM listing writes e& Egypt (or Etisalat, if that is still the printed name). A flag does not hand you 75.8 Mbps. Recheck on the day you pay.

Which eSIM brand lands on which network in Egypt?

The shop window is not the mast. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi and Orange Travel resell capacity. Orange Travel often routes to Orange Egypt: the page may say “Orange” without Egypt. An “Africa” pack can land on a weaker radio than a country plan, or skip Egypt.

Trip priority Network to look for Brands to compare Promo code
Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan WE, otherwise Vodafone Egypt Nomad, Saily, Ubigi, and Egypt packs that name WE or Vodafone Egypt ESIMPNOMAD20, ESIMC, ESIMP
Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, a city break only Vodafone Egypt or Orange Egypt Airalo, Holafly, Orange Travel ESIMP15, SIMP, ESIMP

Three Egypt itineraries, three network choices

Cairo and Giza, 5 days, 5 to 10 GB. Almost any serious 4G plan attaches in town. Take a pack that names WE or Vodafone Egypt, with hotspot if you share to a laptop. Orange Egypt is fine for Maps. It is tighter for photos.

Cairo, Luxor, a cruise, Aswan. WE first, Vodafone Egypt if WE is not written. An unlimited plan whose daily cap is not published in GB is a trap: after the cap, Cairo 5G does not help you on the Nile. National 5G is not the safety net.

Hurghada or Sharm, then Jordan. Compare an Egypt pack plus a small Jordan pack against two separate listings. An Africa eSIM wins on simplicity only if Egypt is on the list. Jordan usually is not. Measure it on the two pages, not on a “30 countries” line.

How to pick an Egypt eSIM network on the comparison

  1. Operator column (WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt) before price per GB.
  2. 5G and hotspot: unlimited without hotspot is a phone plan, not a share to a laptop. In Egypt, 5G is a city bonus, not a road promise.
  3. Activation: first attach in Egypt, or a QR scan at home. Install on Wi-Fi before Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG) or Sharm El Sheikh (SSH). Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only.
  4. Apply the partner promo code, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shop price.
