Egypt roaming: what does it cost, and what are the alternatives in 2026?

Egypt sits outside EU-style roaming. Without a pass, UK data is a day charge or PAYG. Egypt eSIM, local SIM or Pocket WiFi: what undercuts EE, O2, Vodafone or Three in 2026.

In short

Egypt is not “roam like home”. Without a travel pass, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell day charges (or block data until you buy one). A week of Maps on a daily rate already beats most 7-day Egypt eSIMs. Buy an Egypt eSIM if the phone takes one. Keep the UK line on for bank texts. Turn data roaming off on that SIM.

  • Unlocked phone, eSIM possible. An Egypt plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
  • A plan that already includes Egypt. Some extras do. Read your line in the app before you fly, not a memory of an ad.
  • Day pass (EE rest-of-world, O2 Travel if Egypt is listed, Vodafone roaming day, Three Extra). One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days the eSIM almost always wins.
  • Locked phone or no eSIM. An airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The welcome text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at a £7-8 rate is already about £50-56. Maps, a translated menu, Uber start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.

How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Egypt

UK networks do not meter Egypt like a euro-per-MB bill. They sell a daily pass, or a rest-of-world bolt-on. Open Maps without one and you either get no data or you trigger that day’s charge. Egypt is outside Europe. Confirm the country in the app: a Europe zone does not include Cairo.

UK operator Without an Egypt pass What 15 MB of Maps costs Pass if you stay on the UK SIM
EE No data outside the included zone until you buy a pass The day pass, not a per-MB bill Egypt usually sits in a rest-of-world zone, not Europe. Daily passes on public guides are often around £7-8 where the country is listed. Recheck the zone in the EE app before you fly.
O2 Egypt is outside Europe and often outside Travel Inclusive lists A rest-of-world day if your line has one, otherwise a data bolt-on or PAYG Travel bolt-on often around £7/day if the destination tool lists Egypt. If the app says rest of world, do the sum before you open Maps.
Vodafone A daily roaming fee if the plan does not include the destination One roaming day as soon as data attaches On many pay-monthly plans the day fee is often around £7-8. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.
Three Egypt is not Go Roam in Europe. It needs an Extra-style destination if your plan has one A daily Extra charge, or no data if you have no pass Daily Extra on recent plans is often £7-8. “Around the World” without Extra may skip Egypt. Read the list in the Three app.

These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages for rest-of-world days, not a quote for your line. Join date and extra change the number. Open the app before the flight. Seven days at £7-8 is already about £49-56. A 7-day eSIM on the Egypt comparison is almost always cheaper.

When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Egypt pass still makes sense

The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps runs all day for a week.

EE. A rest-of-world day, only if Egypt is in the zone you are buying. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Cairo then Luxor: add the days before you tap yes.

O2. The Travel bolt-on only if the destination tool lists Egypt. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”.

Vodafone. The roaming checker with your number. A day fee stacks. A week of days against the eSIM table, not against a banner.

Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. If Extra does not list Egypt, the pass does not exist for this trip.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Egypt eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges

Unlocked phone with eSIM: buy an Egypt plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The mast that counts is WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt, not the app logo. Off the cities, a pack that writes WE or Vodafone Egypt. Detail: best mobile networks in Egypt.

Airalo, Holafly and Saily are the default. Orange Travel often names Orange Egypt: read the sheet. It is not your UK pass.

Turn off data roaming on the UK SIM in Egypt

The bill returns when both lines have data roaming on. Typical setup:

  1. UK SIM: mobile data off, or data roaming off. Calls and texts can stay.
  2. eSIM: mobile data on, data roaming on.
  3. On the first welcome text, do not tap yes on a pass if the eSIM is already active.

Repeat the gesture after a restart. Some phones put roaming back on the primary line.

Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other alternatives to Egypt roaming

A physical SIM if the phone is locked or you want a local number: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt or WE kiosk, passport. Detail in eSIM or local SIM in Egypt.

Pocket WiFi if several screens cannot take an eSIM. Detail in eSIM or Pocket WiFi in Egypt. The router does not beat roaming by itself: it still has to cost less than the group’s eSIMs.

How many GB for a stay in Egypt without roaming

3-5 days

3-5 GB

Cairo. Maps and messages. A day pass only makes sense if you fly home that evening.

7-8 days

5-10 GB

Cairo and Luxor. Seven out-of-bundle days do not hold.

10-12 days

10-15 GB

The Nile. A monthly bolt-on can cover the dates. Compare the price with an eSIM pack.

3 weeks

15-20 GB

Or the home allowance if the app really lists Egypt. Otherwise an eSIM.

The data calculator tightens the step. Upper Egypt: the network matters more than the volume. Pick the mast, then the GB.

How to compare a roaming pass and an Egypt eSIM

  1. Open your UK operator app. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether Egypt is included on your line.
  2. Open the Egypt page. Operator column (WE, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt) before price per GB. Filter duration to the real dates.
  3. Put the two totals side by side. The eSIM wins as soon as there is more than an afternoon of Maps, unless Egypt is really included.
  4. Apply the partner promo code, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shop price.
