In Cairo the SIM queue often starts before the belts. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Both ride the same kind of Egyptian mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the phone accepts one, unless you truly need a local number or a counter price over three weeks.
Egypt eSIM: the default if the phone is compatible
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy an Egypt plan. Maps, translation, Uber, messages. No deposit, no locker, no nano-SIM swap in a tray.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only. Keep the home line for bank codes.

When to buy a local Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt or WE SIM
Plastic wins in four precise cases.
- You want a local number to call a hotel, a guide or a boat without WhatsApp.
- The phone is locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- The stay is long and the counter’s price per GB, checked that day, clearly beats the eSIM pack.
- You prefer a shop, passport scanned, top-up on the corner.
Even at 15 days, if every pocket has a recent iPhone and WhatsApp is enough: one eSIM per adult, not a nano-SIM “just in case”.
Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt and WE also sell eSIM to their own subscribers. For a tourist, the shop gesture looks like plastic: passport, sometimes a queue. That is not the QR you scanned at home.
Where to buy an Egypt SIM (airport and city)
Official kiosks for all four operators sit in Cairo arrivals (CAI), often also at Hurghada (HRG), Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) and Luxor (LXR), with shorter hours away from CAI. Passport. Skip a seller with no shop sign: a SIM already registered, or no longer registered at all.

A tourist bundle is often a few hundred Egyptian pounds for several GB over 7 to 30 days. The exact step changes with the counter and the day. Compare the price on the board with the price per GB on the Egypt comparison before you choose the queue.
Imported phones and the 90-day window for tourists
Since January 2025, Egypt regulates imported phones. On 21 January 2026 the “one phone in the suitcase” exemption was tightened for residents. The regulator (NTRA) keeps 90 days for tourists, from activation. Any payment goes through the Telephony app, not a customs desk on arrival: registration at the customs office was dropped.
A normal trip (one to three weeks) stays inside that window. If the phone will remain in Egypt past it, open Telephony before the 90 days end. A local SIM still needs a passport. A travel eSIM does not replace that reading if you are staying on.
Egypt eSIM price and a local SIM for 7 days
Over 7 days of Maps, messages and a little video, the eSIM pack wins on time: no queue, installed the day before. The local SIM can win on price per GB if the counter shows a large volume for a few pounds, and you need a number. Add the taxi to the shop if the kiosk is closed. That cost is not on the sticker.
eSIM or local SIM by Egypt itinerary
Cairo and Giza, 5 days. eSIM. All four networks hold in town. Name WE or Vodafone Egypt if the listing allows it.
Luxor, the Nile, Aswan. eSIM too, if the phone takes one. The choice that matters is the network, not the plastic. See best mobile networks in Egypt.
Locked phone, or a local call every day. SIM at the CAI, HRG or SSH kiosk. Keep the home line in the second slot for banks, data off on that line.
How to compare an Egypt eSIM and a Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& or WE SIM
- Check compatibility. If it is no, a local SIM or a Pocket WiFi is the subject, not the QR.
- On the Egypt comparison, operator column before price per GB. Filter duration to the real dates.
- At the counter, note GB, days, voice, and the price in pounds. Convert. Compare with the eSIM total already in the basket, promo code included.
- If the two prices are close and you do not need a number: eSIM. The queue does not refund itself.
