In short
If you already have EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, you are not roaming in the United Kingdom. That is domestic data. Check leftover GB and hotspot. A travel eSIM is for a visitor on a foreign SIM, or a locked work phone that cannot use the UK line. Visitors: buy a United Kingdom eSIM if the phone takes one, install it at home. Tube Wi-Fi does not replace a line off London.
- UK home contract (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three). Stay on it. Travel eSIM is usually unnecessary. Recheck leftover GB and tethering.
- Foreign SIM, unlocked phone, eSIM possible. United Kingdom plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool. EE if you leave the cities.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Local physical SIM at the airport, or Pocket WiFi rental.
- Tablets, several screens without eSIM. Pocket WiFi. One eSIM on an adult so you stay reachable without the router.

At Heathrow the arrivals Wi-Fi often wants an email and a captcha. Meanwhile the Elizabeth line and Google Maps wait. A UK SIM already in the phone attaches when you leave airplane mode. A visitor eSIM you scanned at home does the same. The trap is landing on a foreign SIM with data roaming still on, then buying a “day pass” mindset that belongs to trips *out* of the UK.
United Kingdom travel eSIM: buy it if you land on a foreign SIM
Unlocked handset that takes an eSIM, and the line in the tray is not EE, O2, Vodafone or Three: buy a United Kingdom plan. No deposit, no locker, nothing to return. Keep your home number for bank texts. Data rides the eSIM.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation sentence: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in the United Kingdom. In the second case, leave the line off until you land.
The radio that matters is EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, not the app logo. Off London–Manchester–Birmingham, prefer a pack that writes EE. Network detail lives in best mobile networks in the United Kingdom.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Ubigi sell the United Kingdom: open the plan sheet (operator, 5G, tethering), not the brand homepage. A Europe eSIM only works if the United Kingdom is on the country list.

UK home SIM versus a foreign SIM left on at Heathrow
A UK contract is not roaming at LHR. Maps come off your domestic GB. EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell day passes when *you* leave the United Kingdom. That outbound product is not the inbound bill.
The visitor trap is a foreign SIM with data roaming on. Home-country rates then apply. Some carriers meter per MB. Some sell a daily pass. Open Maps and hope, and the bill is theirs, not Ofcom’s.
| Line in the phone | Data in the United Kingdom | What 15 MB of Maps costs | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE / O2 / Vodafone / Three (UK contract) | Domestic. Not roaming. | Comes off your UK GB | Travel eSIM is usually unnecessary. Check leftover GB and hotspot. |
| Foreign SIM left on (visitor or a UK line swapped abroad) | Home-country roaming. Day pass or per-MB, depending on that contract | Can be a three-figure bill, depending on the home tariff | Turn data roaming off on that line. Put data on a UK travel eSIM. Keep the home number for bank texts. |
We do not paste a foreign operator’s extra-zone table here. Open *that* carrier’s app before you fly if the SIM is not UK. A 7-day eSIM on the United Kingdom comparison is almost always cheaper than a week of someone else’s roaming.
Prefer a travel eSIM when the phone is unlocked, the SIM is foreign, or a locked work phone cannot use a UK line. If the UK plan already includes enough GB, stay on it. Detail: United Kingdom roaming, costs and alternatives.
Keep the home SIM on for calls and bank codes. Turn data roaming off on that line if you use an eSIM. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the foreign bill comes back.
Local physical SIM at Heathrow, Gatwick or in a shop
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or if you prefer a counter with ID. EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, sometimes WHSmith, still sell prepaid. You wait, you show a document, you swap the card.
Compare the counter price with the United Kingdom eSIM table before you queue. A 1 a.m. arrival often finds the shop shut. An eSIM already on the phone does not care about opening hours.
Same rule as eSIM: read the network (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three) and hotspot. Queue and +44 number: United Kingdom eSIM vs local SIM.
Hotel, Tube and airport Wi-Fi in the United Kingdom
British Wi-Fi is everywhere on the poster: hotels, Heathrow, TfL Wi-Fi in many stations. Captive portals work in the hall. They drop on the bus, between two country stops, on a trail.
Use that Wi-Fi to dump photos to the cloud at night, or to install a forgotten profile. Do not build the trip on it. Google Maps and Trainline hold better on a cellular line, especially off London.
Arrivals Wi-Fi at LHR or LGW is for activating an eSIM if you could not do it at home. Keep the QR offline (screenshot, downloaded mail). A captive portal often kills the scan halfway.
Pocket WiFi in the United Kingdom: which gadgets need the router
Rent a router only if screens without eSIM remain: teen tablet, old Android, locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a hotspot by default.
The eSIM Comparator table ranks eSIM plans. It does not list Travel Wifi Router, GlocalMe or TravelersWifi. Router versus eSIM, shops and 7-day maths: United Kingdom eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.
How many GB for a stay in the United Kingdom
London, Manchester, Edinburgh: you walk with Maps, you take the train, you photograph. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the train, or a laptop stays on hotspot all day.
3-5 days
5-10 GBLondon city break. Maps, Tube, photos. Hotel Wi-Fi at night.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities, a little video. 15 GB if you doubt.
12-15 days
15-20 GBScotland, several regions. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited pack whose daily cap and hotspot are printed in GB.
The data calculator tightens the step. Then match validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Highlands, Cornwall, sleeper trains: volume matters less than the mast. Three unlimited in town does not fill an EE hole you skipped. Pick the network first, then the GB. On a UK home SIM, the same steps apply to leftover allowance.
Turn data on after landing at Heathrow or Gatwick
- Leave airplane mode.
- If you use a travel eSIM: turn it on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a United Kingdom profile as roaming even when it sits on EE.
- Turn data roaming off on the foreign SIM. If you stay on EE, O2, Vodafone or Three at home: one line, no spare eSIM “in case”.
- If nothing attaches: airplane mode for thirty seconds, then off. Touch the APN only if the provider listed one.
Failure #1 is roaming left off on the travel line. #2 is a still-locked iPhone that installs the QR then shows No Service. Check compatibility before you pay.
Solo, couple or family: what internet to pack for the United Kingdom
Solo, 8 days, unlocked iPhone, London then Bath. UK home SIM if you have one. Otherwise one United Kingdom eSIM, 10 GB. O2 or EE is enough. No counter.
Couple, two recent Galaxies, Edinburgh and Highlands. Two eSIMs if you are visitors. Packs that write EE. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the sheet says so. UK contracts: check leftover GB before you buy a second line.
Family, two adults on eSIM, two tablets. Two phone plans. Pocket WiFi for the tablets if they must stay online on the train. Put the rental quote next to N times the eSIM price.
Locked work phone. Local physical SIM, Pocket WiFi, or the corporate line if it is already a UK SIM. Do not buy a QR the handset will refuse.
How to find your United Kingdom trip eSIM with our comparison
- Open the United Kingdom page. Operator column (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three) before price per GB.
- Filter validity to the real dates, not hotel-night count.
- Tick hotspot if you share to a tablet or laptop.
- Apply the partner promo, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
