In short
If you already have EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, you are not roaming in the United Kingdom. Domestic data. Check leftover GB and hotspot. The trap is landing on a foreign SIM with data roaming on, then thinking in day-pass terms. Those passes are what UK networks sell when **you leave** the country. Visitors: buy a United Kingdom eSIM if the phone takes one. Keep your home number for bank texts. Turn data roaming off on that SIM.
- UK home contract. Travel eSIM is usually unnecessary. Recheck leftover GB and tethering.
- Foreign SIM, unlocked phone, eSIM possible. UK plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Home-country day pass or world pass on a visitor SIM. One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days the UK eSIM almost always wins.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The “welcome to the UK” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass if the SIM is foreign. It skips the weekly maths. Maps, TfL, a menu to translate start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. A UK SIM already in the phone does not need a pass at all. UK roaming still helps visitors in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.
UK home contract versus a foreign SIM left on in the United Kingdom
EE, O2, Vodafone or Three at home: Heathrow is not roaming. You spend UK GB. Ofcom’s market is domestic. A travel eSIM is for a visitor handset, a locked work phone, or a second line.
| Line in the phone | Data in the United Kingdom | What 15 MB of Maps costs | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE / O2 / Vodafone / Three (UK contract) | Domestic. Not roaming. Not EU roam-like-at-home, because you are home. | Comes off your UK GB | Travel eSIM is usually unnecessary. Check leftover GB and hotspot. |
| Foreign SIM left on (visitor or a UK line swapped abroad) | Home-country roaming. Day pass if that carrier sells one, or per-MB if they meter | Can be a three-figure bill, depending on the home tariff | Turn data roaming off on that line. Put data on a UK travel eSIM. Keep the home number for bank texts. |
We do not paste another country’s extra-zone table here. Open the home operator app before you fly if the SIM is not UK. A 7-day eSIM on the United Kingdom comparison is almost always cheaper than seven days of someone else’s roaming.
EE, O2, Vodafone and Three day passes (Europe, ROW, Travel, Global Roam, Extra) are what they sell when you leave the UK. Mention them only as contrast. They are not the inbound bill on a UK SIM at LHR.
When a foreign roaming pass still makes sense in the United Kingdom
The pass wins if you want the same foreign number for calls home, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps and TfL run all day for a week.
Locked work phone that refuses a second profile, forgotten QR at the gate: same short box. London + Edinburgh is planned on eSIM if the SIM is foreign.
If you keep the foreign SIM on, turn data roaming off. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the foreign bill comes back.
Even on a UK home SIM, a travel eSIM still helps in three cases: you want to stick to EE on a second phone, you want to protect leftover GB, you need hotspot the home plan throttles.
United Kingdom eSIM: the alternative to inbound roaming charges
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM, and you are not already on a UK contract: buy a United Kingdom plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes EE. Network detail: best mobile networks in the United Kingdom.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation sentence: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in the United Kingdom.
Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi sell the United Kingdom: open the plan page (network, 5G, hotspot), not the brand homepage. A Europe eSIM only replaces a UK pack if the country is listed.

How to turn off foreign data roaming in the United Kingdom
Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.
- Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
- Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a United Kingdom profile as roaming even on EE.
- Turn data roaming off on the foreign SIM.
- If you only hold EE, O2, Vodafone or Three at home: one line, no spare eSIM “in case”. This step is for visitors.
Failure n°1: leaving foreign roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.
Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other United Kingdom roaming alternatives
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or a work contract blocks a second profile. EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and a few arrivals kiosks still sell prepaid. Compare the counter with the United Kingdom eSIM table before the queue. A 1 a.m. arrival often finds the stand shut.
Rent Pocket WiFi only if screens without eSIM remain: tablet, old Android, locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a router by default. Shops and 7-day maths: United Kingdom eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.
Hotel, TfL station or airport Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops on the bus. Do not build the trip on it.
How many GB for a United Kingdom trip without roaming
London, Manchester, Edinburgh: maps, Tube, photos. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream, or a laptop stays on hotspot.
3-5 days
5-10 GBLondon city break. Maps, Tube. Hotel Wi-Fi at night.
7-8 days
10-15 GBTwo cities. A little video. 15 GB if you doubt.
12-15 days
15-20 GBScotland, several regions. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.
3 weeks
20 GB or unlimitedOr an unlimited pack whose daily cap is printed in GB. Recheck hotspot.
The data calculator tightens the step. Recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Highlands, Cornwall: the mast matters more than the gigabytes. Pick the network first, then the GB.
How to compare foreign roaming with a United Kingdom eSIM
- Open the home operator app if the SIM is foreign. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether the United Kingdom is already in that plan.
- Open the United Kingdom page. Operator column (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
- Stick the two totals together. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon, unless you are already on a UK home contract.
- Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.

- Ofcom UK mobile market. A UK contract used in the UK is domestic service, not international roaming.
- eSIM-compatible phones If the model is missing or “no”, use a local SIM, Pocket WiFi, or stay on the UK home line.
- EE roaming help ROW zones and day passes when you leave the UK. Contrast only: not the inbound bill on EE at home.
- O2 using your phone abroad Travel bolt-on is outbound. Confirm your number in My O2 if the SIM is O2 UK.
- Vodafone UK global roaming Daily fees abroad. In the UK you use the home allowance.
- Three, Go Roam Go Roam and Extra are outbound. A Three UK SIM in the UK is not Extra.
