Which network to use in the United Kingdom with a travel eSIM

EE for reliability and 5G outside London, O2 for coverage, Three for urban 5G speed. Which eSIM plans actually land on them, per Opensignal January 2026.

In short

An Airalo, Holafly or Ubigi eSIM rides a UK network: EE, O2, Vodafone or Three. Pick the network for the trip, then a plan that prints that name, not just a United Kingdom flag. Prices and the operator column sit on the United Kingdom comparison.

  • Scotland, Cornwall, Lake District, trains off the corridor. EE. Compare packs that write EE.
  • London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh only. EE, O2 or Three will do. Airalo, Holafly, Saily on the same page.
  • United Kingdom then Ireland or France. A UK pack plus a local one, or a Europe eSIM if the United Kingdom is on the list. Check the British partner on the regional plan.
  • Compatible phone. Take an eSIM rather than plastic as soon as the listing names the network. Check the model in the compatibility tool.

The QR code does not radiate at Heathrow. EE, O2, Vodafone and Three do. A travel eSIM is wholesale capacity glued onto one of those four radios. Between Oxford Street and a Fort William platform, the local mast decides if Maps, TfL Go and check-in hold. Not the app logo.

This ranks networks for a visitor, not a UK subscriber. Showcase 5G speeds weigh less than a hole in the Highlands. Figures come from Opensignal’s January 2026 report (measurements 1 October to 29 December 2025). RootMetrics (first half of 2026) also puts EE first. eSIM partners move: open the operator column on the United Kingdom comparison before you pay.

If you already hold EE, O2, Vodafone or Three at home, you are not picking a travel radio. That is domestic data. This note is for a foreign SIM, a second line, or a pack you buy for the trip.

Since the Vodafone–Three merger in 2025, both brands still exist. Radio integration is not finished. A listing that writes Vodafone is not the same as a listing that writes Three. Read the name, not the merger press note.

What “best mobile network in the United Kingdom” means here

Opensignal does not hand out one overall league table. In January 2026, EE takes 11 of 15 awards: reliability (915/1000), consistent quality (78.6%), average download (53.2 Mbps), 5G availability (77.4% of the time). O2 keeps overall coverage. Three leads 5G download (187 Mbps) and time on network (99.4%). Vodafone wins no awards in that report. For a traveller, the useful order is not Shoreditch 5G.

Trip rank Network Where it helps Typical weak spot
1 EE 11 Opensignal awards. Reliability 915/1000. 5G often on. Countryside, Scotland, Cornwall, long-distance trains Not always the partner behind a cheap travel eSIM. “Pure” 5G slower than Three
2 O2 Opensignal coverage. Cities and busy roads. Often the partner behind a travel eSIM Average download 32.8 Mbps. Less useful 5G once you leave the big cities
3 Three 5G 187 Mbps. Time on network 99.4%. London, Manchester, Birmingham 5G available 38.9% of the time. Less convincing once the itinerary leaves the corridor
4 Vodafone Cities. Merger with Three underway. Useful if the listing names it clearly No Opensignal awards in January 2026. 5G 29.6% of the time

Opensignal’s Coverage Experience scores where people live, work and move. Not empty moorland. A trail above the last village does not sit in EE’s 11/15. Sources at the bottom.

1. EE: the safety net outside London

EE still wins most of the experience: reliability, consistent quality, download across technologies, 5G availability. RootMetrics (H1 2026) also puts it first, with a median download of 130.3 Mbps. That is the first test if the stay leaves the London–Manchester–Birmingham triangle: Highlands, Lake District, Cornwall, inland Wales, sleeper trains.

For a visitor, EE means fewer holes between stations. Not the smoothest TikTok in Soho. eSIMs that name EE are the default as soon as the stay is not 100% urban.

Ubigi, GigSky and some Nomad packs sometimes publish EE. That is not a forever contract. Read the plan page, not a 2024 blog.

2. O2: the coverage radio

O2 (Virgin Media O2) keeps the Coverage Experience award. In town, the gap with EE shows on a speed test, not on Maps. London, Liverpool, Brighton, the Tube: O2 is often the partner behind travel eSIMs.

The high valley and thin coasts still trail EE. A London + Bath weekend: O2. A Scotland loop plus a ferry: EE first.

In our United Kingdom comparison, O2 is not rare. You see it on Airalo, Holafly, Saily, sometimes as a pair. The operator line on the plan you pay for beats the app brand.

3. Three: city 5G, shorter net

Three leads 5G download (187 Mbps) and time on network (99.4%). Handy if you stream on the Tube or in a café whose Wi-Fi dies. Off the cities, Three weighs less: 5G is on only 38.9% of the time in the January report.

eSIM listings name Three quite often. Yesim, Roamless and some Orange Travel packs write it. Only hunt Three if the provider writes it, and mostly for a city break.

4. Vodafone: still a separate brand

Vodafone UK wins no awards in Opensignal’s January 2026 report. Average download (37.5 Mbps) sits between Three and O2. 5G is on less often (29.6%). The merger with Three is moving, but the two shopfronts stay distinct for a visitor.

Take Vodafone only if the eSIM listing writes Vodafone. Do not assume “VodafoneThree” gives you EE, or Three’s 5G. Recheck on the day you buy.

Which eSIM brand sits on which United Kingdom network?

The shopfront is not the mast. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi, Yesim resell capacity. Orange Travel often routes as roaming: the sheet can say “Orange” without naming EE. A “Europe” pack can land on a weaker radio than a country plan.

Three United Kingdom itineraries, three network calls

London + Bath, 7 days, 10 GB. Almost any serious 4G/5G pack holds. Take one that names EE, O2 or Three, with hotspot if you share to a laptop. O2 is enough. EE does not hurt.

Edinburgh + Highlands + mountain trains. EE first. An unlimited plan whose daily cap is not published in GB is a trap: after the throttle, Three 5G in town will not help in the glen.

United Kingdom then Ireland. Compare a UK pack plus a small Ireland one against a Europe eSIM. Regional wins on simplicity only if both countries are on the list. Otherwise you buy two plans. Measurable on both pages, not on a “30 countries” slogan.

How to filter EE, O2, Vodafone or Three on the United Kingdom eSIM table

  1. Operator column (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three) before price per GB.
  2. 5G and hotspot: unlimited without hotspot is a phone plan, not a laptop share.
  3. Activation: first attach in the United Kingdom, or scan the QR at home. Install on Wi-Fi before Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW) or Manchester (MAN). Turn data roaming on the eSIM only.
  4. Apply the partner promo, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shopfront number.
