In short
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a United Kingdom eSIM plan: install at home, no queue, nothing to return. A local plastic SIM still helps for a +44 number, a long stay at a low pound-per-GB price, or a handset that refuses eSIM. eSIM plans sit on the United Kingdom comparison. EE, O2, Vodafone and Three shops take pounds, ID in hand.
- Compatible phone, city break or classic circuit. eSIM. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Need to call a hotel or a restaurant on a local number. Official prepaid. Travel eSIMs are often data only.
- Three weeks, heavy volume, tight budget. Compare the counter price per GB with the eSIM table before you queue.
- Late flight into LHR or LGW, shop shut. eSIM already on. Do not count on the kiosk.

At Heathrow the SIM kiosk is not open for every night landing. WHSmith sometimes sells a kit. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi-Fi. Both ride the same kind of British mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it, unless you truly need a UK number or a three-week local tariff.
If you already hold EE, O2, Vodafone or Three at home, skip the shop. That line is domestic. This note is for a visitor, a foreign SIM, or a second handset.
United Kingdom travel eSIM vs a plastic SIM if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a United Kingdom plan. Maps, TfL Go, Trainline, translation. No deposit, no nano-SIM swap in a sleeve, no queue at Paddington on arrival day.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep your home number for bank texts.
Airalo and Holafly cover the United Kingdom: open the plan page (network, 5G, hotspot) before you pay, not the brand homepage. Off London, look for EE on the operator line. Radio detail lives in best mobile networks in the United Kingdom.

When to buy an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three local SIM
The plastic SIM wins in four cases.
- You want a +44 number to call a hotel, a restaurant or an Airbnb without WhatsApp.
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- The stay is long and the prepaid price per GB, checked on the day, clearly beats the eSIM pack.
- You prefer a shop counter, ID scanned, top-ups in pounds.
Even at 15 days, if every pocket has a recent iPhone and WhatsApp is enough: one eSIM per adult, not a nano-SIM “just in case”.
EE, O2, Vodafone and Three also sell local eSIM (PAYG, in-store plans). The gesture looks like plastic: ID, sometimes a My EE or My O2 account. It is not the Airalo QR you scan at home.
giffgaff (O2 radio) and Lycamobile remain prepaid options. Read the host network, not only the kit price.
Where to buy a United Kingdom SIM (airport, station and city)
Official shops sit around Heathrow arrivals, sometimes Gatwick and Manchester, plus the high streets (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, Carphone / shops). WHSmith often sells a tourist kit. Passport or national ID. Skip the unsigned seller in the hall.
| Channel | What you buy | ID | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport shop EE / O2 / Vodafone / Three | Tourist prepaid, sometimes local eSIM | Photo ID | Price often a bit higher than in town. LHR stays open late more often than LGW. |
| WHSmith, arrivals kiosk | Nano-SIM kit, sometimes Three or an MVNO | Depends on the kit | Read the network in writing, not the word unlimited. |
| High-street shop (Oxford Street, Edinburgh, Manchester) | Same operators, sometimes a cheaper kit | Photo ID | Useful if the flight lands and the stand is shut, as long as you already have an eSIM for Uber. |
| Travel eSIM (catalogue) | Data, sometimes hotspot | Your card at home | No UK number. Operator column on the comparison. |
Prepaid bundles move. Recheck the shop sticker, not a 2025 tariff. A British “unlimited” SIM sometimes throttles hotspot. Read the tethering line.
Northern Ireland is not Ireland. A United Kingdom pack from the comparison does not include Dublin.
United Kingdom eSIM vs local SIM price for 7 days
A 7-day United Kingdom eSIM is priced per phone, promo deducted. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
The local SIM is priced in pounds, plus sometimes a kit. A voice number has a price. Twenty GB at £15 can beat a 5 GB eSIM at €15. Three GB of eSIM for a weekend often beats the queue and the exchange.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the United Kingdom comparison, against the EE / O2 / Vodafone / Three sticker on the day. Once every pocket can take eSIM and WhatsApp is enough, the nano-SIM almost always loses on a short stay.
United Kingdom eSIM or local SIM by itinerary
London + Oxford, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No queue at 11 p.m. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and only if the pack says so.
Highlands + need to call B&Bs on a local number. One EE SIM at the counter (or in town the next day) for the number. A data eSIM on the second phone if you want to stay online without draining the voice SIM.
Locked work phone. Official plastic SIM, or corporate roaming if the United Kingdom is truly in the zone. Do not buy a QR the handset will refuse.
Line up a United Kingdom eSIM with an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three shop sticker
Our table ranks eSIMs. It does not list pound prices at the shops.
- If the phone takes eSIM, open the United Kingdom page. Filter hotspot only if you share.
- Note the paid price (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
- Put that total next to the shop sticker, same GB and same days. The local SIM only wins if you need a +44, huge volume, or a phone without eSIM.
- Off London, prefer an eSIM pack that writes EE. A Three SIM in town does not catch an EE eSIM in the Highlands.
How to split a United Kingdom eSIM from an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM
- Compatibility: the tool first. No = plastic SIM or Pocket WiFi, not a QR.
- Need a UK number: yes = official shop. No = eSIM if the phone takes it.
- Operator column on the United Kingdom comparison against the counter brand (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three).
- Paid price against today’s pound sticker. Ignore the struck-through eSIM shop window.

- O2 Pay As You Go O2 shops, airport and high street.
- Vodafone Pay as you go Vodafone UK prepaid. Confirm airport shop hours before a late flight.
