Thailand roaming: what does it cost, and what are the alternatives in 2026?

The “welcome to Thailand” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at £8 is already £56. Maps, a translated menu, Grab start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.

How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Thailand

UK networks do not meter Thailand like a €/MB extra-EU bill. They sell a daily pass, or a rest-of-world bolt-on. Open Maps without one and you either get no data (EE) or you trigger that day’s charge.

These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £6-8 passes is already £42-56. A 7-day eSIM on the Thailand comparison is almost always cheaper, and it skips a tight daily cap where one exists.

When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Thailand pass still makes sense

The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps and Grab run all day for a week.

EE. Zone 1 daily pass, Thailand listed on the price guide, UK allowance. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Bangkok then Phuket: add the days before you tap yes. A weekly Zone 1 pass exists on public guides; still compare it with a 7-day eSIM.

O2. Travel bolt-on around £7/day, Thailand listed. Inclusive Zone Ultimate uses a longer list that includes Thailand. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”. If it says rest of world or a short Inclusive Zone, do the sum before you open Maps.

Vodafone. Global Roam day fee on most newer pay-monthly plans, often ~£7.86/day after 11 August 2021. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.

Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. Complete extras can include Thailand. “Around the World” without Extra does not.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Thailand eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges

Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Thailand plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is AIS, TrueMove H or dtac, not the app logo. Off Bangkok, prefer a pack that writes AIS. Network detail: best mobile networks in Thailand.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Thailand.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Thailand

Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.

1. Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
2. Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
3. Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Thailand profile as roaming even on AIS.
4. Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
5. If your plan already includes Thailand: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.

Failure n°1: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.

Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other Thailand roaming alternatives

Hotel or café Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops on the BTS and after the ferry. Do not build the trip on it.

How many GB for a Thailand trip without roaming

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket: maps, Grab, translated menus. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream, or a laptop stays on hotspot.

The data calculator tightens the step. Recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. North, islands: the mast matters more than the gigabytes. Pick the network first, then the GB.

How to compare a UK roaming pass and a Thailand eSIM

1. Open the UK operator app. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether Thailand is already in the plan.
2. Open the Thailand page. Network column (AIS, TrueMove H, dtac) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
3. Stick the two totals together. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon, unless Thailand is truly included.
4. Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
