If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Thailand eSIM plan: install at home, no deposit, nothing to return. Rent Pocket WiFi only for tablets, a group laptop, or a carrier-locked handset. eSIM plans sit on the Thailand comparison. Routers are booked with the rental shops below, not in our table.
- Compatible phone, one or two people. eSIM plan. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
- Family, everyone on a recent iPhone or Galaxy. One eSIM per adult. Hotspot only if the pack says so, for a laptop at night.
- Tablets, phone without eSIM. Pocket WiFi rental (SmileWiFi, Samurai WiFi, MUAYTHAI WiFi). Add an eSIM on one adult if you want signal without the box.
- North, islands after the ferry. AIS eSIM if the phone takes it. Otherwise a router whose listing writes AIS.
At Suvarnabhumi nobody hands you a NINJA WiFi like Narita. Here Pocket WiFi is booked online, collected at the counter (often 24 hours) or delivered to the hotel. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it at home. Both ride the same kind of Thai mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it. The router only comes in if some screens cannot.
Thailand eSIM first if the handset takes a profile
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Thailand plan. Grab, Maps, translation. No card deposit, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes in a tuk-tuk.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line on for bank texts.

When to rent Pocket WiFi in Thailand
The router wins in three cases.
- Devices without eSIM (teen tablet, old Android) must stay online without draining your phone.
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- Four or five screens at the same table all day, and nobody wants to run hotspot.
Even with four people, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not a router by default. Hotspot on an “unlimited” pack whose daily cap is not printed in GB is a trap.
Where to book Pocket WiFi in Thailand (SmileWiFi, Samurai)
Rental shops are not in our catalogue. You book on their site (or via KKday / Klook), collect at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang or Phuket, and return on the way out. Read the network on the rental you pay, the insurance, and the lost-device fee. Count on a deposit of about 1,000 to 2,000 THB, frozen until return.

Days are often billed between a few euros and around ten, plus a deposit. Line up quotes for the same dates, not homepage banners that shout “unlimited 300 Mbps”.
A 1 a.m. arrival plus a live eSIM skips a shut counter or a courier who only comes the next day. Hotel delivery is booked before you fly, not in the passport queue.

Thailand eSIM price vs Pocket WiFi rental for 7 days
A 7-day Thailand eSIM is priced per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a city break.
Pocket WiFi is a daily rate, plus insurance, plus sometimes a deposit. Five devices on one router do not multiply the rent. A solo traveller who opens Maps for an hour still pays the day. Over three days, the frozen deposit often exceeds the rent.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Thailand comparison, against a SmileWiFi or Samurai quote for the same dates. Once every pocket can take eSIM, the router almost always loses.
Thailand eSIM or Pocket WiFi by itinerary
Bangkok + Phuket, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No locker. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and only if the pack says so.
Family, 12 days, two adults on iPhone, two tablets. Two adult eSIMs. Pocket WiFi for the tablets if they need to stay online in the van. Not one router “for everyone” if the teens already have compatible phones.
North + island, phone without eSIM. Pocket WiFi whose listing writes AIS. Do not buy a QR the handset cannot swallow. Alternative: local SIM at the counter.
Line up a Thailand eSIM with a Pocket WiFi quote
Our table ranks eSIMs. It does not list SmileWiFi, Samurai or MUAYTHAI WiFi. Do not hunt a deposit or counter hours there.
- If the phone takes eSIM, open the Thailand page. Filter hotspot only if you share to a tablet or laptop.
- Note the paid price (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
- Put that total next to the rental quote, same dates. The router only wins if screens without eSIM remain, or the quote is genuinely lower.
- Off Bangkok, prefer an eSIM pack that writes AIS. TrueMove H Pocket WiFi does not catch an AIS eSIM after the ferry.
How to stick a SmileWiFi or Samurai quote next to the Thailand eSIM table
- Phone compatibility: the tool first.
- Open the Thailand page. Operator column, validity, hotspot.
- Ask the rental shop for a quote (network in writing, deposit, delivery).
