If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a Thailand eSIM plan: install at home, no queue, nothing to return. A local plastic SIM still helps for a +66 number, a long stay at a low baht-per-GB price, or a handset that refuses eSIM. eSIM plans sit on the Thailand comparison. - Late flight into Suvarnabhumi, stand shut. eSIM already on. Do not count on the kiosk.
At Suvarnabhumi the SIM queue often starts before the belts. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi-Fi. Both ride the same kind of Thai mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it, unless you truly need a Thai number or a three-week local tariff.
Thailand travel eSIM vs a plastic SIM if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Thailand plan. Grab, Maps, translation, boat tickets. No deposit, no locker, no nano-SIM swap in a sleeve.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line on for bank texts.

When to buy an AIS, TrueMove H or dtac local SIM
The plastic SIM wins in four cases.
- You want a +66 number to call a hotel, a guide or a boat without WhatsApp.
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- The stay is long and the counter price per GB, checked on the day, clearly beats the eSIM pack.
- You prefer a shop counter, passport scanned, top-ups at 7-Eleven.
Even at 15 days, if every pocket has a recent iPhone and WhatsApp is enough: one eSIM per adult, not a nano-SIM “just in case”.
AIS, TrueMove H and dtac also sell local eSIM in-store or in their apps. The gesture looks like plastic: ID, sometimes a queue. It is not the Airalo QR you scan at home.
Where to buy a Thailand SIM (airport and city)
Official kiosks for all three operators sit at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) arrivals, often Phuket, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui too, with shorter hours. Passport. Skip the unsigned seller in the hall: a SIM already registered, or no longer registered at all.

Tourist bundles move (orders of magnitude: a few hundred THB for 8 to 15 days, more for a month). Recheck the kiosk poster, not a 2025 screenshot. An “unlimited” SIM whose daily cap is not printed in GB behaves like a throttled plan once Maps and Grab run all day.
Thailand eSIM price vs a local SIM for 7 days
A 7-day Thailand eSIM is priced per phone, in euros, promo deducted. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
The local SIM is paid in baht, plus sometimes a kit. A voice number has a price. Fifteen GB at 299 THB can beat a 5 GB eSIM at €15. Three GB of eSIM for a weekend often beat the queue and the cash exchange.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Thailand comparison, against the AIS / TrueMove H / dtac poster that day. Once every pocket can take eSIM and WhatsApp is enough, the nano-SIM almost always loses on a short stay.
Thailand eSIM or local SIM by itinerary
Bangkok + Phuket, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No 11 p.m. queue. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and only if the pack says so.
Northern circuit + island, need to call the boat. One AIS SIM at the counter (or in town the next day) for the number. A data eSIM on the second phone if you want to stay online without draining the voice SIM.
Locked work phone. Official plastic SIM, or corporate roaming if it is truly included. Do not buy a QR the handset will refuse.
Line up a Thailand eSIM with an AIS, TrueMove H or dtac kiosk

- If the phone takes eSIM, open the Thailand page. Filter hotspot only if you share.
- Note the paid price (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
- Put that total next to the kiosk poster, same GB and same days. The local SIM only wins if you need a +66, huge volume, or a phone without eSIM.
- Off Bangkok, prefer an eSIM pack that writes AIS. A TrueMove H city SIM does not catch an AIS eSIM after the ferry.
How to choose between a Thailand eSIM and a local prepaid SIM
- Compatibility: the tool first. No = plastic SIM or Pocket WiFi, not a QR.
- Need a Thai number: yes = official kiosk. No = eSIM if the phone takes it.

- Paid price against today’s THB poster. Ignore the struck-through eSIM shopfront.
