Japan roaming: what does it cost, and what are the alternatives in 2026?

The “welcome to Japan” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at £8 is already £56. Maps, Suica, a translated menu start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.

How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Japan

UK networks do not meter Japan like French operators (€10 / MB). They sell a daily pass. Open Maps without one and you either get no data (EE) or you trigger that day’s charge.

These are orders of magnitude from August 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £7–8 passes is already £49–56. A 7-day eSIM on the Japan comparison is almost always cheaper, and it skips a 500 MB daily cap.

When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Japan pass still makes sense

The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps runs all day for a week.

EE. Zone 3 daily pass, Japan listed, 500 MB. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Tokyo then Kyoto: add the days before you tap yes.

O2. Travel bolt-on at £7/day, or Inclusive Zone Ultimate if your contract already lists Japan. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”.

Vodafone. Global Roam day fee on most newer pay-monthly plans. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.

Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. Complete extras can include Japan. “Around the World” without Extra does not.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Japan eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges

Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Japan plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is Docomo, au (KDDI) or SoftBank, not the app logo. Off Tokyo–Osaka, prefer a pack that writes Docomo. Network detail: best mobile networks in Japan.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Japan.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Japan

Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.

1. Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
2. Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
3. Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Japan profile as roaming even on Docomo.
4. Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
5. If your plan already includes Japan: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.

Failure n°1: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.

Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other Japan roaming alternatives

A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or a work contract blocks a second profile. BIC Camera, carrier shops and some arrivals kiosks still sell data packs. Compare the counter with the Japan eSIM table before the queue. A 5 a.m. arrival often finds the stand shut.

Konbini, hotel or station Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops in the subway. Do not build the trip on it.

How many GB for a Japan trip without roaming

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka: maps, photos, translated menus. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the shinkansen, or a laptop stays on hotspot.

The data calculator tightens the step. Recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Hokkaido, onsen, islands: the mast matters more than the gigabytes. Pick the network first, then the GB.

How to compare a UK roaming pass and a Japan eSIM

1. Open the UK operator app. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether Japan is already in the plan.
2. Open the Japan page. Network column (Docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
3. Stick the two totals together. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon, unless Japan is truly included.
4. Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
