Australia roaming: what does it cost, and what are the alternatives in 2026?

Australia sits outside EU-style roaming. Without a pass, UK data is a day charge or PAYG. Australia eSIM, local SIM or Pocket WiFi: what undercuts EE, O2, Vodafone or Three in 2026.

In short

Australia is not “roam like home”. Without a travel pass, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell day charges (or block data until you buy one). A week of Maps at £6-8 a day already beats most 7-day Australia eSIMs. Buy an Australia eSIM if the phone takes one. Keep the UK line on for bank texts. Turn data roaming off on that SIM.

  • Unlocked phone, eSIM possible. Australia plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
  • Plan that already includes Australia. Some Ultimate / Complete extras do. Read your line in the app before you fly, not a memory of an ad.
  • Day pass (EE rest-of-world, O2 Travel if Australia is listed, Vodafone Global Roam, Three Extra). One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days the eSIM almost always wins.
  • Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The “welcome to Australia” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at £8 is already £56. Maps, Uber, a menu to translate start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.

How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Australia

UK networks do not meter Australia like a €/MB extra-EU bill. They sell a daily pass, or a rest-of-world bolt-on. Open Maps without one and you either get no data (EE) or you trigger that day’s charge. Australia is often a different zone from the USA and Canada: a pass that names Toronto does not automatically name Sydney.

UK operator Without an Australia pass What 15 MB of Maps costs Pass if you stay on the UK SIM
EE No rest-of-world data until you buy a pass The day pass, not a per-MB bill Australia is often outside Zone 1 (USA and Canada). Daily rest-of-world passes are often around £6, with the UK allowance if the zone matches. Recheck the country page: a Zone 1 weekly pass can show no Australia on a given day.
O2 Standard roaming unless Travel or Inclusive Zone Ultimate is on the plan One Travel day if the bolt-on is active Travel bolt-on is often ~£7/day when Australia is on the list. Ultimate plans can include a long destination list. The shorter Inclusive Zone (about 27 destinations) usually skips Australia. Confirm in My O2.
Vodafone UK A daily fee if Global Roam is not in the plan One roaming day as soon as data attaches Often ~£7.86/day on pay-monthly plans started on or after 11 August 2021 (later guides near £8). Older plans: often £6/day. Check the roaming checker with your number and Australia selected. This row is Vodafone UK, not the Australian network.
Three Australia is Go Roam Around the World Extra, not Europe A daily Extra charge, or PAYG if you have no pass Daily Extra often £7 if you joined or upgraded from 1 October 2021. Plans from 18 December 2025: often £8/day from 1 April 2026. Complete plans from 22 June 2025 can include Extra. Extra lists often name Australia. Europe or “Around the World” without Extra may skip it.

These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £6-8 passes is already £42-56. A 7-day eSIM on the Australia comparison is almost always cheaper, and it skips a tight daily cap where one exists.

When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Australia pass still makes sense

The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps and Uber run all day for a week.

EE. Rest-of-world day pass, Australia only if the country page lists it. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Sydney then Uluru: add the days before you tap yes. Do not assume a USA Zone 1 weekly pass covers Australia.

O2. Travel bolt-on around £7/day when Australia is listed. Inclusive Zone Ultimate uses a longer list. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”. If it says a short Inclusive Zone, do the sum before you open Maps.

Vodafone UK. Global Roam day fee on most newer pay-monthly plans, often ~£7.86/day after 11 August 2021. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post. The local radio on an eSIM is Vodafone Australia, a different company.

Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. Complete extras can include Australia. Extra lists often name Australia. “Around the World” without Extra does not.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Even with Australia included, an eSIM still helps in three cases: you want Telstra (UK roaming sometimes lands on Optus or Vodafone Australia), you want to protect the plan’s travel allowance, you need a hotspot the eSIM page writes down.

Australia eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges

Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy an Australia plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is Telstra, Optus or Vodafone Australia, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes Telstra. Network detail: best mobile networks in Australia.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Australia.

Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi sell Australia: open the plan page (network, 5G, hotspot), not the brand homepage. An Oceania eSIM only replaces an Australia pack if Australia is listed. A New Zealand pack is not enough.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Australia

Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.

  1. Leave airplane mode on arrival.
  2. Switch the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
  3. Turn data roaming on for that line only. Many iPhones treat an Australia profile as roaming even on Telstra.
  4. Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
  5. If the plan truly includes Australia and you stay on that line only: one line, data roaming on, no second eSIM “just in case”.

Failure number one: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not one.

Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other alternatives to Australia roaming

A local physical SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but without eSIM, or if a work contract refuses a second profile. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and a few arrival shops still sell prepaid. Compare the counter price with the Australia eSIM table before the queue. A 1 am flight often finds the shop shut.

Rent a Pocket WiFi only if screens remain without eSIM: a tablet, an old Android, a locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a hotspot by default. Renters, 7-day quotes and the call: Australia eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.

Hotel, café or airport Wi-Fi helps in the evening. It drops on the Hume Highway. Do not build the trip on it.

How many GB for a stay in Australia without roaming

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane: maps, Uber, photos. The cards match maps + messages + a bit of video. Add a tier if you stream in the van, or if a laptop stays on hotspot.

3-5 days

5-10 GB

Sydney city break. Maps, Uber. Hotel Wi-Fi in the evening.

7-8 days

10-15 GB

Two cities. A bit of video. 15 GB if you are unsure.

12-15 days

15-20 GB

East coast, several states. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.

3 weeks

20 GB or unlimited

Or an unlimited plan whose daily cap and hotspot are written in GB.

The data calculator tightens the tier. Recheck the plan duration: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Outback and parks: volume matters less than the mast. Pick the network first, then the gigabytes.

How to compare a roaming pass and an Australia eSIM

  1. Open the UK operator app. Note whether Australia is in the plan, or on a pass (price, GB, days).
  2. Open the Australia page. Operator column (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) before price per GB. Filter duration to the real dates.
  3. Put the two totals side by side. The eSIM wins as soon as there is more than one afternoon of Maps without Australia included. With a plan that truly includes it, stay on the UK SIM.
  4. Apply the partner promo code, then read the price paid. Ignore the struck-through shop price.
