Which network to use in Australia with a travel eSIM

Telstra for the Outback and long drives, Optus for city download speed, Vodafone Australia for urban 5G. Which eSIM plans land on them, per Opensignal May 2026.

In short

An Airalo, Holafly or Ubigi eSIM attaches to an Australian network: Telstra, Optus or Vodafone. The right one depends on the route. Buy a plan that names that operator, not only an Australia flag. An Oceania eSIM does not include Australia by magic. Prices and the operator column are on the Australia comparison.

  • Outback, inland Tasmania, Western Australia, the road between towns. Telstra. Compare packs that write Telstra.
  • Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast only. Optus, Telstra or Vodafone Australia is enough. Airalo, Holafly, Saily on the same page.
  • Australia then New Zealand. An Australia pack plus a local one, or an Oceania eSIM if both countries are listed. Check the Australian partner on the regional plan.
  • Compatible phone. Take an eSIM rather than plastic as soon as the plan names the network. Check the model in the compatibility tool.

The QR does not transmit at Kingsford Smith. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone do. A travel eSIM is wholesale capacity stuck to one of those three radios. Between Circular Quay and an Uluru car park, the local mast decides whether Maps, Opal and check-in hold. The app logo does not.

This note ranks networks for a traveller, not for an Australian subscriber. Shop-window 5G speeds matter less than a hole on the Stuart Highway. Figures come from the Opensignal report of May 2026 (measurements from 1 January to 31 March 2026). eSIM partners move: open the operator column on the Australia comparison before you pay.

Vodafone here is the Australian brand (TPG group). Not Vodafone UK. The name a traveller should search is Vodafone. “TPG” alone does not say which radio you land on.

What “best mobile network in Australia” means here

Opensignal does not hand out a single ranking. In May 2026, Optus leads experience: 8 awards, including 4G download (58.3 Mbps) and 5G download (199.9 Mbps). Vodafone takes 6, including upload (8.8 Mbps on 4G, 15.6 Mbps on 5G), Consistent Quality (85%) and, tied with Optus, Reliability (945 and 944 out of 1000). Telstra keeps two, and they are the two that matter once you leave the city: Coverage 9.6/10, 5G Coverage 8.0/10. For a road trip, the useful order is not Melbourne’s 5G chart.

Trip rank Network Strength on a route Typical weakness
1 Telstra Coverage 9.6/10. 5G coverage 8.0/10. Outback, inland Tasmania, long WA drives Fewer city “experience” awards. 4G download 51.7 Mbps, behind Optus
2 Optus 4G download 58.3 Mbps and 5G download 199.9 Mbps. Video and games. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane Coverage 8.5/10. 5G on 63.8% of the time. Weaker once the road empties
3 Vodafone Consistent Quality 85%. Reliability 945/1000. 5G on 85.7% of the time for its 5G users. Cities Coverage 8.0/10. 4G download 39.3 Mbps. Sites mostly urban (85.4% in major cities)

Opensignal’s Coverage Experience scores the footprint where people live, work and travel. Not the share of empty desert. An off-track trail is not inside Telstra’s 9.6. Vodafone’s “5G available 85.7% of the time” is time spent on 5G by subscribers already in town. It is not an Outback map. Sources are at the bottom.

1. Telstra: the net outside the cities

Telstra keeps coverage and 5G coverage. That is criterion number one if the trip leaves the Sydney–Melbourne–Brisbane triangle: Red Centre, Great Ocean Road away from the towns, inland Tasmania, the Kimberley, Western Australian distances, roads between cities.

For a traveller, Telstra means fewer holes between motels. Not the smoothest TikTok at Bondi. eSIMs that name Telstra are the default as soon as the stay is not 100% urban. Reliability has climbed hard (+61 points since April 2025, score 937). It sits next to Optus and Vodafone, without taking the award.

Ubigi, GigSky and some Nomad packs sometimes publish Telstra. That is not a permanent contract. Read the plan page, not a 2024 blog.

2. Optus: download speed on the east coast

Optus wins download, video and games, on 4G and on 5G. In town, the gap with Telstra shows up on a speed test more than on Maps. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, the Gold Coast: Optus is often the travel-eSIM partner, and that is where 199.9 Mbps on 5G is useful.

The long road and the interior stay behind Telstra (coverage 8.5 versus 9.6). A Sydney + Melbourne weekend: Optus. An Uluru loop plus a Tasmanian ferry: Telstra first.

On our Australia comparison, Optus is not rare. You see it at Airalo, Holafly, Saily, sometimes as a pair. The operator line on the plan matters more than the app brand. Where all three networks are present, Opensignal (May 2026, common coverage areas) still has Optus ahead on download speed.

3. Vodafone Australia: city quality, shorter net

Vodafone leads upload and Consistent Quality (85%, ahead of Optus 84.3% and Telstra 83.3%). Reliability is shared with Optus (945 versus 944). Useful if you upload photos at Circular Quay, or if you want 5G switched on often in the cities where Vodafone already has customers.

Outside those cities, Vodafone weighs less. Opensignal notes that 85.4% of its sites are in major cities. A regional sharing deal with Optus extends reach. Owned infrastructure stays urban. Overall coverage is 8.0/10, 5G coverage 5.4/10.

eSIM pages cite Vodafone fairly often. Yesim, Roamless and some Orange Travel packs write it sometimes. Look for Vodafone only if the provider writes it, and mainly for a city break.

Boost, Amaysim, Lebara: useful at the counter, not the eSIM trio

Counter prepaid often rides a wholesale radio. Boost, Belong and Aldi Mobile sit on Telstra. Amaysim on Optus. Lebara and Kogan on Vodafone. Handy if you buy plastic in town. It is not, in general, the name written on a travel eSIM.

Catalogue eSIMs almost always stick to Telstra, Optus or Vodafone. Look for Boost or Amaysim only if the plan writes it. Queue and +61 detail: Australia eSIM vs local SIM.

Which eSIM provider matches which network in Australia?

The shop window is not the mast. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi and Yesim resell capacity. Orange Travel often routes as roaming: the page can say “Orange” without naming Telstra. An “Oceania” pack can land on a weaker radio in Australia than a country plan. A New Zealand pack does not include Australia.

Three Australia itineraries, three network choices

Sydney + Melbourne, 7 days, 10 GB. Almost any serious 4G/5G plan attaches. Take a pack that names Optus, Telstra or Vodafone, with hotspot if you share to a laptop. Optus is enough. Telstra does not fail you.

Red Centre + inland Tasmania, or a WA drive. Telstra first. An unlimited plan whose daily cap is not published in GB is a trap: after the throttle, Optus 5G in town will not help between Alice Springs and Uluru.

Australia then New Zealand. Compare an Australia pack plus a small New Zealand pack, against an Oceania eSIM. The regional wins on simplicity only if both countries are on the list. Otherwise you buy two plans. Measurable on the two pages, not on a “2 countries” slogan.

How to pick an Australia eSIM network on the comparison

  1. Operator column (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) before price per GB.
  2. 5G and hotspot: an unlimited plan without hotspot is a phone plan, not a share to a laptop.
  3. Activation: first attach in Australia, or QR scan at home. Install on Wi-Fi before Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) or Brisbane (BNE). Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only.
  4. Apply the partner promo code, then read the price you pay. Ignore the struck-through shop price.
