For a Switzerland trip in 2026, buy a Switzerland eSIM plan if the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile. Install it at home. At Zurich Airport the arrivals Wi-Fi often wants an email and a captcha. Meanwhile SBB Mobile and Google Maps wait. An eSIM you scanned at home attaches when you leave airplane mode. That is the move that skips the SIM shop queue and the surprise of a Switzerland missing from a “Europe” slogan that never named your plan.
Switzerland travel eSIM: buy it at home if the phone takes one
Unlocked handset that takes an eSIM: buy a Switzerland plan. No deposit, no locker, nothing to return. The UK line stays for bank SMS. Data rides the eSIM.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation sentence: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Switzerland. In the second case, leave the line off until you land.
The radio that matters is Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt, not the app logo. Off Zurich–Geneva–Lausanne, prefer a pack that writes Swisscom. Network detail lives in best mobile networks in Switzerland.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Ubigi sell Switzerland: open the plan sheet (operator, 5G, tethering), not the brand homepage. A <a href="/regions/europe">Europe eSIM</a> only works if Switzerland is on the country list.

EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming in Switzerland
Switzerland is not in legal EU roam-like-at-home. UK networks still often list it in their Europe zone. That is a commercial list, not the EU rule. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. If Switzerland sits in Europe on *your* plan, stay on the UK SIM. If it does not, you get a Europe-style day pass (or no data until you buy one), not a per-MB meter.

If Switzerland is already in Europe on your line, a 7-day eSIM is optional, not a rescue. If it is not, seven Europe day charges still add up; a 7-day eSIM on the Switzerland comparison is often cheaper, and it skips a fair-use cap where one exists.
Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Turn data roaming off on that line if you use an eSIM. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Local physical SIM at Zurich, Geneva or in a shop
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or if you prefer a counter with a passport. Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt, sometimes Swiss Post, still sell prepaid. You wait, you show a passport, you swap the card.
Compare the counter price with the Switzerland eSIM table before you queue. A 1 a.m. arrival often finds the shop shut. An eSIM already on the phone does not care about opening hours.

Hotel, SBB and airport Wi-Fi in Switzerland
Swiss Wi-Fi is everywhere on the poster: hotels, airports (often no time cap at ZRH and GVA), SBB Free Wi-Fi in many stations and trains. Captive portals work in the hall. They drop in the valley, between PostBus stops, on a trail.
Use that Wi-Fi to dump photos to the cloud at night, or to install a forgotten profile. Do not build the trip on it. Google Maps and SBB Mobile hold better on a cellular line, especially off the plateau.
Arrivals Wi-Fi at ZRH or GVA is for activating an eSIM if you could not do it at home. Keep the QR offline (screenshot, downloaded mail). A captive portal often kills the scan halfway.
Pocket WiFi in Switzerland: which gadgets need the router
Rent a router only if screens without eSIM remain: teen tablet, old Android, locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a hotspot by default.

Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne: you walk with Maps, you take the train, you photograph. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the train, or a laptop stays on hotspot all day.

The data calculator tightens the step. Then match validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Alps, passes, mountain trains: volume matters less than the mast. Sunrise unlimited in town does not fill a Swisscom hole you skipped. Pick the network first, then the GB.
Turn data on after landing at Zurich or Geneva
- Leave airplane mode.
- Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Switzerland profile as roaming even when it sits on Swisscom.
- Turn data roaming off on the UK SIM, unless you stay on a plan that truly lists Switzerland in Europe.
- If nothing attaches: airplane mode for thirty seconds, then off. Touch the APN only if the provider listed one.
Failure #1 is roaming left off on the travel line. #2 is a still-locked iPhone that installs the QR then shows No Service. Check compatibility before you pay.
Solo, couple or family: what internet to pack for Switzerland
Solo, 8 days, unlocked iPhone, Zurich then Lucerne. One Switzerland eSIM, 10 GB. Sunrise is enough. No counter. No EE “world” pass in parallel, unless your plan already lists Switzerland in Europe.
Couple, two recent Galaxies, Interlaken and Zermatt. Two eSIMs. Packs that write Swisscom. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the sheet says so.
Family, two adults on eSIM, two tablets. Two phone plans. Pocket WiFi for the tablets if they must stay online on the train. Put the rental quote next to N times the eSIM price.
Locked work phone. Local physical SIM, Pocket WiFi, or corporate roaming if Switzerland is truly included. Do not buy a QR the handset will refuse.
