In short
Switzerland is not in legal EU roam-like-at-home. Many EE, O2, Vodafone and Three plans still put it in their Europe zone. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app. If Switzerland is in Europe on your plan, stay on the UK SIM. If it is not, you pay a day charge (or get no data until you buy one), not a per-MB meter. For a stay without inclusion, buy a Switzerland eSIM if the phone takes one. - Europe day pass, Zone B day, Go Roam Europe pass. One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days without inclusion, the eSIM almost always wins.
- Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.
The “welcome to Switzerland” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass, or it stays quiet. It skips the distinction that matters: legal EU roam-like-at-home stops at the Swiss border, while your UK tariff may still treat Switzerland as Europe. Maps, SBB, a translated menu start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids a week of day charges if the app says Switzerland is out. UK roaming still wins if Switzerland is truly in Europe on your line, or in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.
How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Switzerland
UK networks do not meter Switzerland like a per-MB extra-EU bill. They either include it in Europe, or they sell a daily Europe pass. Open Maps without checking the app and you either use your UK allowance, trigger that day’s charge, or get no data (EE, until you buy a pass).
If your contract writes Switzerland in the Europe list, the “without inclusion” column does not apply: you use the listed allowance, fair-use cap included.

These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven Europe day charges still add up. A 7-day eSIM on the Switzerland comparison is almost always cheaper than a week of passes, unless Switzerland is truly included.
When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Switzerland pass still makes sense
The pass (or staying on the UK SIM) wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and Switzerland is already in Europe on the plan, or the stay is one short burst. It loses as soon as Maps and SBB run all day for a week, paid as stacked day charges.
EE. Open My EE. If Switzerland is in Europe and the plan is inclusive, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”. If the tariff bills a Europe day, add the days before you tap yes. Zurich then Zermatt over 10 days: compare that total with a Switzerland eSIM.
O2. Pay-monthly Europe Zone is the frequent case where staying on the UK SIM is rational for data (watch the fair-use cap, often around 25 GB). If My O2 does not list Switzerland, do not assume “EU”. PAYG is a different logic: check the Europe day before you open Maps.
Vodafone. Zone B, not Zone C. Inclusive Euro Roam: stay on the SIM. No Euro Roam: Zone B day or an 8 / 15-day Europe pass. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.
Three. Go Roam in Europe, not Extra. Complete / Europe-inclusive: stay on the UK SIM. Lite without Europe: a Europe pass or an eSIM. “Around the World” without Europe still skips nothing if the app already lists Switzerland in Europe. Read the app.
Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM if you bought one. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.
Cross-border workers: fair-use rules (often a cap on days outside the UK in a rolling window) still apply. A one-week holiday is not that case. A “Switzerland unlimited” line read too fast is still a UK contract, on a roaming partner that is not always Swisscom.
Switzerland eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Switzerland plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes Swisscom. Network detail: best mobile networks in Switzerland.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation sentence: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Switzerland.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Switzerland
Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.
- Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
- Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Switzerland profile as roaming even on Swisscom.
- Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
- If you stay on an O2 Europe Zone line, EE inclusive Europe, Vodafone Euro Roam, or Three Go Roam in Europe that truly lists Switzerland: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.
Failure #1: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.
Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other Switzerland roaming alternatives
A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or a work contract blocks a second profile. Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt and a few arrivals shops still sell prepaid. Compare the counter with the Switzerland eSIM table before the queue. A 1 a.m. arrival often finds the shop shut.

Hotel, SBB station or airport Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops in the valley. Do not build the trip on it.

- Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app. Note whether Switzerland is in Europe on your plan, or the pass (price, GB, days).
- Open the Switzerland page. Operator column (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
- Stick the two totals together. Stay on the UK SIM if Switzerland is truly included. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon without Europe inclusion.
