Morocco roaming: what does it cost, and what are the alternatives in 2026?

Morocco sits outside EU-style roaming. Without a pass, UK data is a day charge or PAYG. Morocco eSIM, local SIM or Pocket WiFi: what undercuts EE, O2, Vodafone or Three in 2026.

In short

Morocco is not “roam like home”. Without a travel pass, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three sell day charges (or block data until you buy one). A week of Maps at £7-8 a day already beats most 7-day Morocco eSIMs. Buy a Morocco eSIM if the phone takes one. Keep the UK line on for bank texts. Turn data roaming off on that SIM.

  • Unlocked phone, eSIM possible. Morocco plan. Install at home. Check the model in the compatibility tool.
  • Plan that already includes Morocco. Some Complete extras do. Read your line in the app before you fly, not a memory of an ad.
  • Day pass (EE Zone 2, O2 rest-of-world / Travel if listed, Vodafone Global Roam, Three Extra). One afternoon, a forgotten QR, a work phone. Over 7 days the eSIM almost always wins.
  • Locked phone or no eSIM. Airport plastic SIM, or Pocket WiFi.

The “welcome to Morocco” text often lands before the bags. It offers a pass. It skips the weekly maths: seven days at £8 is already £56. Maps, a translated menu, Careem start on their own. An eSIM you scanned at home avoids that bill. UK roaming still helps in three short cases. The rest of the trip is paid another way.

How much EE, O2, Vodafone or Three roaming costs in Morocco

UK networks do not meter Morocco like a €/MB extra-EU bill. They sell a daily pass, or a rest-of-world bolt-on. Open Maps without one and you either get no data (EE) or you trigger that day’s charge.

UK operator Without a Morocco pass What 15 MB of Maps costs Pass if you stay on the UK SIM
EE No extra-EU data until you buy a pass The day pass, not a per-MB bill ROW Zone 2 (Morocco listed). Daily pass often around £7.50-8, UK allowance. Weekly Zone 2 pass often around £40 on the public guides. Recheck the zone in the app.
O2 Morocco is usually outside Europe and often outside the Travel / Inclusive Zone lists A rest-of-world bolt-on day if your line has one, otherwise a Zone 3-style data bundle or PAYG Travel bolt-on is often ~£7/day where Morocco is listed. Many Morocco trips are not on that list: then rest-of-world / Zone 3 data bolt-ons (small GB for tens of pounds) or PAYG. Confirm Morocco in My O2.
Vodafone Zone C or D daily fee if Global Roam is not in the plan One roaming day as soon as data attaches Often ~£7.86/day on pay-monthly plans started on or after 11 August 2021 (later guides near £8). Older plans: often £6/day. Check the roaming checker with your number.
Three Morocco is Go Roam Around the World Extra, not Europe A daily Extra charge, or PAYG if you have no pass Daily Extra often £7 if you joined or upgraded from 1 October 2021. Plans from 18 December 2025: often £8/day from 1 April 2026. Complete plans from 22 June 2025 can include Extra. Europe or “Around the World” without Extra may skip Morocco.

These are orders of magnitude from September 2026 operator pages. Join date, extra and fair-use cap change the number. Open My EE, My O2, My Vodafone or the Three app before the flight. Seven days of £7-8 passes is already £49-56. A 7-day eSIM on the Morocco comparison is almost always cheaper, and it skips a tight daily cap where one exists.

When an EE, O2, Vodafone or Three Morocco pass still makes sense

The pass wins if you want the same number for UK calls, and the stay is short. It loses as soon as Maps runs all day for a week.

EE. Zone 2 daily pass, Morocco listed, UK allowance. Fine for an unplanned afternoon. Ten days Marrakech then Fez: add the days before you tap yes. A weekly Zone 2 pass exists on public guides; still compare it with a 7-day eSIM.

O2. Travel bolt-on around £7/day if the destination tool lists Morocco. Inclusive Zone Ultimate uses a longer list, and Morocco is often missing. If the app says rest of world or Zone 3 data bundles, do the sum before you open Maps. If the app says included, do not buy an eSIM “just in case”.

Vodafone. Global Roam day fee on most newer pay-monthly plans, often ~£7.86/day after 11 August 2021. The roaming checker with your number beats a forum post.

Three. Extra destinations, not Europe. Complete extras can include Morocco. “Around the World” without Extra does not.

Keep the UK SIM on for calls and bank codes. Point mobile data at the eSIM. If both lines roam, the UK bill comes back.

Morocco eSIM: the alternative to roaming charges

Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Morocco plan. No deposit, nothing to return. The radio that matters is Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or inwi, not the app logo. Off the cities, prefer a pack that writes Maroc Telecom. Network detail: best mobile networks in Morocco. Orange Travel names Orange Maroc, not Orange France.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Read the activation line: some plans start at scan, others at first attach in Morocco.

Orange Travel names Orange Maroc. Airalo, Holafly and Ubigi also sell Morocco: open the plan page (network, 5G, hotspot), not the brand homepage.

How to turn off UK data roaming in Morocco

Two lines on. Only one should carry Maps.

  1. Leave airplane mode at arrivals.
  2. Turn the travel eSIM on. Set it as the mobile data line.
  3. Turn data roaming on that line only. Many iPhones treat a Morocco profile as roaming even on Orange Maroc.
  4. Turn data roaming off on the EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM.
  5. If your plan already includes Morocco: one line, data roaming on, no spare eSIM “in case”.

Failure n°1: leaving UK roaming on “for emergencies”. Emergencies are calls. Maps is not.

Local SIM and Pocket WiFi: other Morocco roaming alternatives

A local plastic SIM still helps if the phone is unlocked but has no eSIM, or a work contract blocks a second profile, or you want a +212. IAM, Orange Maroc and inwi kiosks still sell prepaid. Compare the counter with the Morocco eSIM table before the queue. A late arrival often finds the stand shut. Detail: Morocco eSIM vs local SIM.

Rent Pocket WiFi only if screens without eSIM remain: tablet, old Android, locked phone. A family where every pocket has a recent iPhone buys one eSIM per adult, not a router by default. Shops and 7-day maths: Morocco eSIM vs Pocket WiFi.

Riad or café Wi-Fi helps at night. It drops in the medina. Do not build the trip on it.

How many GB for a Morocco trip without roaming

Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca: maps, photos, translated menus. The cards match maps + messages + a little video. Add a step if you stream on the train, or a laptop stays on hotspot.

3-5 days

3-5 GB

Marrakech city break. Maps, messages, translation. Riad Wi-Fi at night.

7-8 days

5-10 GB

Marrakech then Fez. A little video on the train. 10 GB if you doubt.

12-15 days

10-15 GB

Cities plus Atlas. Take 15 days of validity if the flight home is in the morning.

3 weeks

15-20 GB

Or an unlimited pack whose daily cap is printed in GB. Recheck hotspot.

The data calculator tightens the step. Recheck validity: 7 days for 8 nights is tight. Atlas, south, dunes: the mast matters more than the gigabytes. Pick the network first, then the GB.

How to compare a UK roaming pass and a Morocco eSIM

  1. Open the UK operator app. Note the pass (price, GB, days) or whether Morocco is already in the plan.
  2. Open the Morocco page. Network column (Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, inwi) before price per GB. Filter duration on real dates.
  3. Stick the two totals together. The eSIM wins as soon as Maps runs more than one afternoon, unless Morocco is truly included.
  4. Apply the partner promo, then read the paid price. Ignore the struck-through shop window.
